Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

The rain lashed violently against the reinforced glass of the penthouse suite, turning the Ashford Bay skyline into a blurred watercolor of neon lights and dark shadows.
Three days had passed since Lucas Hale had effectively seized control of St. Matthew’s Hospital's upper wing. Wyatt was recovering faster than the doctors had ever predicted, his color returning, his strength slowly rebuilding with each passing hour. Yet, inside the suite, Quinn felt the walls closing in.
She paced across the plush wool rug, her bare feet making no sound. The burner phone Lucas had given her sat on the mahogany desk, its dark screen mocking her. She hadn't used it. She hadn't called him, and true to his word, he hadn't forced his presence upon her since their conversation three nights ago. He was giving her space—the one luxury a mafia boss rarely afforded anyone.
*Knock. Knock.*
The double rap on the heavy oak door was crisp, professional, and entirely devoid of warmth.
Quinn stopped pacing. "Come in."
The door clicked open, and Teddy Voss stepped into the room. The massive enforcer looked as formidable as ever, his shoulders broad beneath a dark trench coat glistening with rain. But behind him stood someone Quinn had never expected to see.
A middle-aged woman with sharp, intelligent eyes, iron-gray hair pulled back into a severe bun, and a tailored emerald-green suit that screamed old money and absolute authority. She carried a sleek leather briefcase and looked around the luxurious medical suite with an expression of mild, clinical detachment.
"Miss Beckett," Teddy said, nodding respectfully. "This is Elena Vance. Head of Hale Enterprises' legal and strategic division."
Quinn’s eyes widened slightly. *Vance?* "Vance? As in... Viktor Vance?"
The woman gave a thin, humorless smile, stepping further into the room. "Viktor is a distant, disgraced cousin of mine, Miss Beckett. A loud-mouthed degenerate who brings shame to our family name. Do not mistake my bloodline for his affiliation. I work exclusively for Lucas."
"Right," Quinn murmured, crossing her arms defensively. "And why are you here in my hospital room at nine o'clock at night?"
"Because Boss Hale is currently occupied putting out a very messy fire across the bay," Elena said smoothly, opening her briefcase and pulling out a thick manila folder. She placed it on the desk. "Viktor Vance is licking his wounds, but he's prideful. And desperate. He knows Lucas has taken a personal interest in you. In our world, interest equals vulnerability."
Quinn felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying that staying locked in this hospital suite is no longer enough," Elena said, her tone clinical and unyielding. "Viktor's associates are testing our perimeter. Last night, two of his men were intercepted trying to bribe a member of the night-shift cleaning crew to get access to this floor."
Wyatt, who had been resting quietly in his bed, suddenly sat up, his face pale. "Quinn... what's happening? Who are these people?"
"Nothing, buddy, go back to sleep," Quinn said quickly, forcing a tight, reassuring smile before turning back to Elena with a flash of righteous fury in her eyes. "This is insane! I didn't ask for any of this war! If your boss hadn't terrorized me on Harbor Street in the first place, none of this would be happening!"
"You are entirely correct, Miss Beckett," Elena replied without missing a beat, completely unfazed by Quinn’s outburst. "Lucas Hale is a ruthless, violent man. He built his empire on blood and intimidation. But right now, whether you accept it or not, your survival is inextricably linked to his."
Elena pushed the manila folder across the desk toward Quinn.
"What is that?" Quinn asked warily.
"It is a relocation protocol," Elena said. "By dawn, your brother will be transferred via private medical transport to a secure, undisclosed safe house in the Berkshire mountains. Fully staffed, fully equipped. You are coming with us."
Quinn stared at the folder as if it were a venomous snake. "And if I say no? If I want to stay here in the city?"
"Then you are walking out into the crosshairs of a territorial war," Elena replied calmly. "Viktor Vance wants to hurt Lucas. And the easiest way to break a wolf is to slaughter the lamb he's trying to protect."
The word *lamb* grated against every fiber of Quinn’s independent soul. For twenty-six years, she had fought tooth and nail for every breath, every dollar, every inch of ground she stood on. She wasn't a lamb. She was a survivor.
"I want to talk to Lucas," Quinn said, her voice dropping to a hard, icy whisper. "Get him on the phone."
Elena raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine respect crossing her sharp features. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a secure encrypted satellite terminal, punched in a sequence of numbers, and handed it directly to Quinn.
"He's listening."
Quinn took the device, pressing it tightly against her ear.
"Lucas," she said, her voice shaking slightly with adrenaline.
"I'm here, Quinn," his deep, gravelly voice came through the speaker instantly, clear and steady above the background sound of heavy rain and roaring engines. "Are you alright? Did Elena give you the protocol?"
"She gave me an ultimatum," Quinn fired back, refusing to let her voice tremble. "You drop a war on my doorstep, and your solution is to drag me and my sick brother off to some secret mountain bunker like prisoners of war? I'm not running away, Lucas."
A heavy silence stretched over the line for several seconds. When Lucas spoke, his voice was dangerously low, carrying a dark, razor-sharp edge.
"You aren't running away, Quinn. You're being guarded," Lucas said firmly. "Viktor thinks he can leverage you to force my hand. I am not going to give him the satisfaction of even getting within a mile of you. The transport leaves at four a.m. Be packed."
"Lucas, listen to me—"
*Click.*
The line went dead.
Quinn lowered the phone slowly, her chest heaving with a mixture of fury and helpless desperation. She looked over at Wyatt, who was watching her with wide, frightened eyes, and then down at the manila folder on the desk.
