Chapter 8 - Fire and Blood

The crisp mountain air outside the safe house was shattered by the deafening crack of automatic gunfire.

Sparks flew from the reinforced stone pillars of the grand entryway as a hail of bullets chewed through the exterior walls. Glass shattered inward, raining down like glittering diamonds across the hardwood floors of the grand living room.

Quinn crouched low behind a massive stone hearth, her grip on the silenced pistol trembling slightly before her military-grade survival instincts—forged from years of protecting her brother in the slums—finally kicked in. She took a deep breath, steadying her hands just as Lucas had taught her.

Across the room, Lucas moved with terrifying, fluid grace. He wasn't just a businessman; he was a tactical mastermind who had survived a dozen turf wars. Firing from behind a reinforced mahogany pillar, his shots were calculated, lethal, and devastatingly precise.

*Bang. Bang. Bang.*

Three muffled concussions from his sidearm echoed through the chaos. Across the grand room, two black-clad Boston syndicate hitters dropped instantly, their assault rifles clattering uselessly against the floor.

"Teddy! Status on the lower wing?!" Lucas shouted over the roaring din of gunfire.

"Secure, Boss!" Teddy’s voice boomed back from the reinforced hallway leading to the medical wing. "The kids are locked in the panic bunker. The blast doors are holding!"

"Good! Flush the rest of them out through the west terrace!" Lucas ordered.

Suddenly, the heavy oak front doors of the safe house exploded inward in a splintered shower of wood and iron. A fresh wave of four heavily armed mercenaries poured into the foyer, their tactical flashlights cutting beams through the smoke and haze.

Before Lucas could pivot, one of the hitters raised his rifle directly toward his blind spot.

Quinn didn't think. She didn't hesitate.

She stood up from behind the stone hearth, raised the pistol with both hands, and squeezed the trigger.

*Pfft.*

The silenced bullet caught the mercenary square in the shoulder. He spun around with a sharp grunt, his rifle discharging harmlessly into the ceiling before he collapsed to the floor.

The remaining three hitters instantly turned their weapons toward Quinn.

Before they could pull their triggers, Lucas moved with the speed of a striking panther. He closed the distance between himself and the lead attacker in a blur of motion, driving the butt of his pistol into the man’s temple with bone-crushing force. Teddy and the reinforcement team poured out of the side corridors, quickly overwhelming the remaining two intruders in a brutal, efficient sweep.

Within ninety seconds, the gunfire stopped.

The heavy smell of cordite, gunsmoke, and burning insulation filled the grand room.

Silence descended, broken only by the crackle of the fireplace and the heavy, ragged breathing of the surviving guards.

Lucas dropped the empty magazine of his pistol, slamming a fresh one home with a sharp *clack*. He spun around frantically, his eyes scanning the smoke-filled room until they locked onto Quinn standing near the stone hearth.

In three long strides, he crossed the room, grabbed her by the shoulders, and pulled her hard against his chest.

"Are you hit?" Lucas demanded, his voice rough, urgent, and laced with a terror he had never felt in his entire life. "Quinn, talk to me. Are you bleeding?"

"I'm fine, Lucas. I'm completely fine," Quinn breathed, resting her forehead against his chest, feeling the frantic, hammering rhythm of his heart beneath her hands. She looked up at him, a faint, breathless smile touching her lips. "See? I told you I'm not a lamb."

Lucas let out a harsh, ragged breath, pulling her back into an embrace so tight it nearly bruised her ribs. He buried his face in her hair, closing his eyes as the full realization of how close he had come to losing her washed over him.

"Never do that again," Lucas murmured fiercely against her ear.

"Then don't ever try to lock me away again," Quinn whispered back, her arms wrapping tightly around his waist.

Teddy stepped into the room, stepping over a fallen mercenary, his face grim. "Boss, we interrogated the team leader before he passed out. They weren't sent by a rival family. They were hired by a shell corporation tied directly to the federal indictment board. Someone high up in the state department wants Ashford Bay destabilized. They wanted you dead, Boss."

Lucas slowly pulled back from Quinn, his dark eyes turning into twin glaciers of pure, frozen fury. The protective lover vanished instantly, replaced once again by the undisputed king of the Ashford Bay underworld.

"Get our legal team on the secure satellite," Lucas commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal register. "We're going to Washington. It's time to clean house from the very top."
