Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Snow

The morning sun broke over the snow-covered peaks of the Berkshire mountains, casting a blinding, crystal-white glare across the glass walls of the safe house.
Inside the master suite, the room was quiet except for the steady, rhythmic crackle of the fireplace embers. Quinn lay curled against Lucas’s chest, her head resting comfortably over his heart. The steady, powerful thumping of his pulse beneath her cheek was a grounding anchor in a world that had turned completely upside down.
For the first time in her life, Quinn felt safe. Not because she was hiding, but because the man holding her was a force of nature that nothing in this world could break.
Lucas gently stroked her dark hair, his fingers weaving through the strands with a practiced gentleness that contrasted sharply with his lethal reputation.
"Wyatt's doctor called a few minutes ago," Lucas murmured, his voice rich with morning gravel. "The latest bone marrow and kidney panels came back. The specialized filtration has stabilized him completely. In two weeks, he'll be cleared for the permanent transplant list."
Quinn closed her eyes, a warm tear of pure relief slipping down her cheek and sinking into the fabric of Lucas’s shirt. "Thank you," she whispered.
"Don't thank me," Lucas replied, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head. "Thank your mother. She bought this moment twelve years ago."
Before Quinn could answer, a sharp, piercing sound shattered the morning silence.
*BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.*
It wasn't a phone. It was the secure, encrypted emergency alarm console mounted near the suite's private entrance.
Lucas’s body went completely rigid in a fraction of a second. The tender, vulnerable man vanished instantly, replaced by the lethal, calculating crime boss of Ashford Bay. With fluid, terrifying speed, he slid out of bed, grabbing his holster and strapping it across his broad chest before pulling on a dark tactical shirt.
"Stay here," Lucas commanded, his voice dropping into an authoritative, unarguable register as he drew his sidearm.
"Lucas, what is it?" Quinn sat up quickly, pulling the sheet over her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Viktor is locked up. Who could be here?"
"Viktor wasn't the only player on the board, Quinn," Lucas said grimly, stepping toward the door. "There are factions in Boston who saw Viktor's arrest as an opportunity. They want the Ashford Bay corridor."
Before Quinn could argue, the heavy oak door of the suite burst open.
Teddy Voss rushed into the room, his face dark, his tactical vest buckled tight, holding an assault rifle across his chest.
"Boss, we've got a breach," Teddy reported rapidly. "perimeter sensors tripped at the southern ridge. A strike team. They bypassed the EMP grid. They're moving up the access road fast."
"How many?" Lucas asked, checking the magazine of his pistol with a sharp, mechanical *click*.
"At least a dozen. Professional. Syndicate hitters from the Boston underground," Teddy said, his eyes darting toward Quinn. "They know you're here, Boss. They're coming for her."
Lucas’s dark eyes flashed with pure, unadulterated fury. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
"Lock down the medical wing. Secure Wyatt in the panic bunker beneath the wine cellar," Lucas ordered, his voice an absolute ice decree. "Nobody touches him. Nobody."
"And you, Boss?"
"I'm going to meet our guests," Lucas said, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Let's see how brave they are when they step into my house."
As Lucas turned toward the door, Quinn slid out of bed, grabbing her clothes and pulling them on with desperate speed.
"You're not going out there alone," Quinn said, her voice ringing out clearly through the bedroom.
Lucas stopped at the doorway, turning back to look at her, his expression thunderous. "Quinn, no. This is a war zone. Stay in the safe room."
"I spent my entire life fighting to keep my family alive on the streets of Ashford Bay, Lucas Hale," Quinn said, her eyes flashing with the same untamed fire that had captivated him on Harbor Street. "I am not hiding in a cellar while the man I love goes out to die."
The word hung in the air between them—heavy, undeniable, and absolute. *Love.*
Lucas stared at her for one long, breathless second. Then, a deep, resonant rumble of respect and fierce devotion echoed in his chest. He reached out, grabbed a heavy, silenced pistol from Teddy's tactical belt, checked the safety, and handed it firmly to Quinn.

"Stay behind me," Lucas growled, his dark eyes locked onto hers. "And if anything moves, you pull the trigger."
