Chapter 1 - The Lockdown in the Grand Ballroom

The sharp, crystal chime of the silver spoon against the champagne flute echoed off the gilded cornices of the grand ballroom, cutting through the low murmur of one hundred elite guests.
Alessandro Moretti lowered the glass to the passing waiter’s silver tray. His bespoke charcoal three-piece suit was immaculate, his crimson silk pocket square tucked with geometric precision, yet the stillness radiating from his frame felt like the sudden drop in atmospheric pressure before a hurricane makes landfall.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Alessandro said, his baritone smooth, resonant, and completely devoid of tremor. "An unexpected technical fault has occurred in our estate's automated electrical and fire-containment systems. For everyone's absolute safety, the exterior iron gates and service exits have been sealed by central dispatch. Our private security detail will assist you with refreshments in the east conservatory while we complete a precautionary diagnostic."
Beside the central ice sculpture, Francesca Vane—Alessandro’s twenty-six-year-old fiancée, the daughter of an elite Manhattan developer—stepped forward. She wore an exquisite sapphire silk gown, a three-carat diamond pendant resting against her throat. Her fingers twisted the gold links of her matching evening clutch with rapid, erratic twitches.
"Alessandro, darling," Francesca breathed, her voice carrying a fragile, melodic flutter. "If there is a technical problem, surely my father and our guests should be permitted to take their limousines home. Ethan was frightened by the housekeeper's child. Keeping everyone locked inside will only cause an unnecessary panic among our investors."
Alessandro slowly turned his slate-gray gaze toward her.
"My son is not frightened, Francesca," Alessandro replied softly. "My son is alive."
Francesca’s throat worked in a dry swallow. She looked away, her eyes darting nervously toward the towering arched double doors where four armed men in dark tactical suits had just engaged the heavy brass deadbolts.
Marco, the head of household security, approached Alessandro from behind, murmuring in a low, disciplined cadence: "The server room on sub-level one is secured, Boss. No personnel entered or exited the security hub since five o'clock. The internal cameras covering the service pantry and the main kitchen are fully intact."
"Bring the forensic kit to my study," Alessandro commanded. "And escort Miss Vane to the library. Place two guards at the door."

Francesca gasped, her cheeks flushing crimson. "Alessandro! You're treating me like a suspect in front of my own family!"
"I am treating everyone in this house like a suspect, Francesca," Alessandro said, each word falling like an iron weight upon marble. "Because someone in this room just tried to put my eight-year-old son into an early grave."
