Chapter 4 - The Shadow Behind the Debt

By 10:30 a.m., the family suite of the hospital had been converted into an active corporate and forensic war room.
Sloan sat propped up in a comfortable armchair, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater and dark trousers provided by the estate staff. Hazel and Iris sat on either side of her, their arms wrapped around their mother’s waist, their heads resting against her shoulders in pure, unshakeable contentment as they showed her their sketchbooks.
Damian sat across the low mahogany table, reviewing forty-two banker's boxes of unsealed financial records with Arthur Ross and Chief Financial Auditor David Sterling.
"Let’s review the corporate foreclosure scheme, Arthur," Damian commanded, his voice crisp and clinical.
Arthur Ross tapped his digital stylus against the wall-mounted projection display, illuminating the forensic flow of capital:
TARGET: CALLAWAY STRUCTURAL DESIGN LLC
PRIMARY ASSET: 12 SEISMIC RETROFITTING PATENTS // PUGET SOUND DEEPWATER BERTHS
VALUATION: $85,000,000.00
FABRICATED LIABILITIES: $342,000.00 (ROUTED VIA APEX MARITIME / CAYMAN ESCROW).
"Here is the architecture of the trap, Sloan," Arthur Ross explained, turning to her with deep professional respect. "When you submitted your master engineering designs for the deepwater terminal three years ago, Viktor Vance and Harrison Sterling recognized that your patented damper technology would reduce construction costs by forty percent across the entire port authority."
"They couldn't duplicate the math without infringing on my federal patents," Sloan noted, her engineer's mind analyzing the data with sharp, crystalline clarity.
"Exactly," Arthur confirmed. "So they used Apex Maritime to bribe the municipal inspectors to withhold your site clearance certificates. Then they bought your commercial promissory notes from First Seattle Bank, inflated the penalty interest to thirty-six percent, and hired private debt collection enforcers to stalk you in Fremont."
David Sterling stepped forward, sliding an unsealed, red-tabbed legal dossier across the table.
"Look at the master purchase-and-sale covenant they prepared for signature this Friday, Damian," David said. "Under the terms of the settlement, Sloan was to assign all twelve patents to Apex Maritime Holdings in exchange for the forgiveness of her three-hundred-thousand-dollar debt, leaving her completely penniless and barred from practicing structural engineering in the state of Washington."
Hazel looked up from her sketchbook, her small hand reaching out to touch Damian’s sleeve. "Daddy... the mean men in the black trucks who parked outside our school... are they the ones who made Mommy sick?"
Damian looked down at his daughter.
He reached out, cupping Hazel’s cheek with his large, warm hand, his slate-gray eyes filled with boundless, protective devotion.
"Those men will never park near your school again, Hazel," Damian promised softly. "And their bosses are about to lose everything they have ever stolen."
He turned to Arthur Ross.
"Arthur," Damian commanded, his baritone dropping into an octave of sovereign iron.

"Yes, Damian?"
"Assemble our private security detail at the Rainier Club. Prepare the emergency lis pendens filings for all sixty-four Apex property holdings. And notify Harrison Sterling and Viktor Vance that the owner of Seattle will be joining their luncheon in person."
