Chapter 3 - The Ambush at the Pier

The three black SUVs breached the chain-link gates of Pier 42 with their high beams blazing, their tires screaming against the wet gravel as they formed a semi-circle to block the exit ramp.
Eight men in sterile tactical gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns, leaped from the vehicles, moving in a tight wedge formation toward the warehouse entrance.
They did not know that the shadow waiting in the doorway was the undisputed sovereign of New York's five boroughs.
Alessandro walked out onto the concrete loading dock, carrying Clara against his chest, stepping into the armored Escalade as Giovanni secured four-year-old Stella in the rear jump seat. The German shepherd, Barnaby, limped into the cabin, collapsing beside the child’s feet with a deep, shuddering sigh of exhaustion.
The driver slammed the heavy ballistic doors shut, engaging the internal atmospheric seals.
The lead contractor, a scarred mercenary with private military insignia on his tactical vest, stepped forward, raising a loudspeaker.
"By order of the Sterling Consortium, surrender the female fugitive and the child immediately! You are interfering in an active private recovery contract!"
Alessandro stood on the running board of the vehicle, his black overcoat billowing in the wind, his slate-gray eyes locking onto the mercenary with the vast, quiet indifference of a mountain watching dust blow away.
"You pursued a mother and child into my territory," Alessandro said, his baritone slicing through the rain without the aid of a microphone. "You put iron on the woman who wears my name."
Alessandro raised two fingers.
From the shadows of the surrounding shipping cranes, six heavy sniper rifles chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum spoke simultaneously.
The muzzle flashes illuminated the mist in blinding white bursts.
The lead contractor and three mercenaries crumpled to the asphalt before their weapons could level.
The remaining four men scrambled frantically for the cover of their engine blocks, but Giovanni and Luca stepped off the loading dock, their automatic weapons barking in synchronized, devastating precision, systematically dismantling the vehicles and neutralizing the threat in less than twelve seconds.
The pier fell into an absolute, dead silence, broken only by the hiss of steam rising from ruptured radiators and the steady drumming of the rain against the steel hulls.

Alessandro stepped back into the cabin, closing the reinforced door.
"To the Long Island estate," Alessandro commanded. "Maximum speed."
