Chapter 6 - The Waking of Clara

At noon that day, the autumn sun flooded the master bedroom suite through the soaring arched French doors.
Clara slowly opened her eyes.
The cold concrete pit was gone. The yellow zip-ties, the rotted insulation, and the terrifying screams of the mercenaries had vanished.
She lay in the center of a bed dressed in pure white Egyptian linen, the room filled with the warm, comforting scent of fresh white jasmine and roasted coffee.
Sitting on the edge of the mattress, holding her hand with infinite gentleness, was Alessandro.
Beside him, curled up on the duvet with her head resting against Clara’s hip, four-year-old Stella was sleeping peacefully, while Barnaby lay at the foot of the bed, his tail thumping once against the wood as he saw his mistress wake.
"Alessandro..." Clara whispered, her hazel eyes shining with tears of pure, unburdened relief.
Alessandro leaned down, wrapping his massive, protective arms around her shoulders, pulling her fragile frame into his chest, burying his face in her neck.
"I’m here, my love," Alessandro murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "You're home. You are finally home."
Clara wrapped her trembling arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder, weeping out six years of terror, isolation, and unyielding hope.
"I never stopped looking for you, Alessandro," she sobbed softly against his collar. "Every single night in that room... I held Stella against my chest and told her that her father was the strongest man in the world. I told her you would come for us."
Alessandro kissed her forehead, her bruised cheeks, and her trembling lips with deep, sacred reverence.
"No one will ever separate us again, Clara," Alessandro said, his slate-gray eyes holding hers with unbreakable devotion. "I tore down their empire for you. And now we are going to build our own."
Stella stirred on the bed, rubbing her eyes with small fists, looking up with a wide, radiant smile.

"Mommy! Daddy!" she giggled, throwing her arms around both of their necks. "The big dog is sleeping on my feet!"
Alessandro scooped both Clara and Stella into his embrace, holding his wife and daughter close against his beating heart as the golden afternoon sun bathed the room in eternal, sovereign warmth.
