Chapter 4 - The Recovery at the Manor

The master suite of the Moretti estate in Oyster Bay was transformed into a high-tier critical care unit within twenty minutes of our arrival.

Dr. Mateo Reyes and three senior trauma nurses from Mount Sinai worked with quiet, mechanical speed under the warm light of the chandeliers. Clara lay in the center of the massive four-poster bed, swaddled in heated thermal blankets, two wide-bore IV lines infusing warmed electrolytes, blood plasma, and broad-spectrum antibiotics into her veins.

"Severe systemic hypothermia, acute dehydration, and two fractured ribs from blunt-force trauma," Dr. Reyes reported, adjusting the digital cardiac monitor beside the bed. "The laceration on her forehead required twelve sutures, but the cranial CT scan is clear of intracranial hemorrhage. She was starving, Alessandro. She hadn't eaten a solid meal in at least five days."

Alessandro sat in the leather armchair beside the mattress, holding Clara’s cold, bruised hand against his cheek, his thumb gently smoothing over her knuckles.

Across the room, four-year-old Stella sat on the velvet sofa, dressed in clean, oversized cotton pajamas provided by Mrs. Gable. She was eating a bowl of warm chicken broth and sourdough bread, while Barnaby—his paws cleaned, bandaged, and treated with antiseptic salve—slept with his heavy head resting in her lap.

Stella looked across the room at Alessandro.

She climbed down from the sofa, carrying a small piece of bread in her hand, walking across the thick Persian rug until she stopped beside his knee.

"Are you the king?" Stella asked, her small voice clear, musical, and fearless.

Alessandro’s chest tightened so violently he could barely draw breath. He lowered himself onto one knee, looking into the eyes that were the mirror image of his own.

"I am your father, Stella," Alessandro whispered, his voice trembling with a love so vast it terrified him. "I am your papa."

Stella studied his face for several long seconds—the sharp jawline, the dark hair, the deep scar along his temple.

She reached out with her small, sauce-stained fingers, gently touching the corner of his eye where a single tear was tracking down his cheek.

"Mommy showed me your picture in the Bible every night," Stella said softly. "She told me that if we ever found the black raven restaurant, you would build a big wall and make the bad men go away."

Alessandro pulled his daughter into his arms, lifting her against his chest, burying his face into her soft, dark curls, weeping with the raw, miraculous joy of a father whose lost world had been resurrected from the ashes.

"I will build a fortress of iron around you, my sweet girl," Alessandro wept. "And no bad man will ever touch you again."
