Chapter 2 - The Shadow Ledger

Forty-eight hours later, a heavy summer thunderstorm broke over Charlotte, drumming against the leaded glass windows of Frank Vance’s private office on Tryon Street.

The mahogany conference table was spread with thick manila folders, certified banking statements, and corporate resolutions bearing the red seal of the North Carolina Secretary of State.

Frank Vance pushed a pair of gold-rimmed reading glasses up his nose, looking at David with grave, weary eyes.

"You were right to look, David," Frank began, tapping a highlighted paragraph on an executive charter. "Three weeks ago, your father, Arthur Carter, signed what he believed was a routine administrative proxy allowing your future wife to coordinate wedding-related vendor disbursements from the family’s charitable trust accounts."

"What was it actually?" David asked, leaning forward in his chair.

"It was a conditional assignment of irrevocable durable power-of-attorney," Frank said, his voice tight. "The document stipulates that in the event of Arthur’s sudden physical incapacitation or cognitive decline, sole execution authority over the sixty-million-dollar Carter Foundation and its real estate holdings transfers not to you, but to the designated family trust administrator."

"And who is named as administrator?"

"Rachel Montgomery," Frank stated. "Co-signed by her older brother, Julian Montgomery, who conveniently operates a private equity liquidation firm in Atlanta."

David felt a cold, sharp clarity settle behind his ribs.

The pieces of the puzzle fell into place with terrifying precision. Rachel’s sudden insistence that his grandmother Evelyn’s personal care be handled entirely within the house; her complaints that Evelyn was becoming forgetful; her subtle campaign to convince Arthur that a nursing facility was 'too harsh' and that private, in-house medical oversight was better.

"Why get rid of Maya first?" David murmured.

Frank pulled a secondary file from his leather briefcase.

"Because Maya is not just a housekeeper, David," Frank said softly. "Maya is an honors student in clinical nursing at Central Piedmont. She administers your grandmother’s daily digitalis and blood-pressure prescriptions under Dr. Henderson’s direct orders. Maya logs every dose in a physical medical journal she keeps locked in the pantry."

"And if Rachel wanted to alter Grandmother’s medication to induce confusion or a mild cardiovascular crisis," David realized, his blood turning to ice, "Maya would notice the discrepancy in five minutes."

"Maya is the only person in that house who actually watches what goes into Evelyn’s body," Frank confirmed. "To manufacture a medical decline in your grandmother and seize the estate before the wedding, Rachel had to remove the witness."

David closed the folder with a quiet, final snap.

"She isn't getting Maya fired, Frank," David said, rising to his full height. "She’s going to walk down that aisle into an iron trap."
