Chapter 6 - The Presentation of Truth

"This is an outrage!" Julian Montgomery bellowed, stepping forward from the centerpiece table to flank his sister. "Arthur, control your son! Rachel has endured weeks of this girl's incompetence and theft! We have proof that Maya has been stealing your mother’s prescription narcotics!"

Arthur Carter looked around the room, sweat beading on his forehead as dozens of prominent socialites began to whisper in shock. "David, please... let's take this into a private room. We cannot cause a scene—"

"No, Father," David said, his voice ringing clear and steady. "We are going to settle this right here, in the light."

David walked to the raised dais at the front of the ballroom, stepping up to the presenter’s podium.

He pulled a sleek silver remote control from his jacket pocket and pointed it at the eighty-foot digital projection screen used for corporate banquets.

The house lights dimmed automatically.

The massive screen illuminated in crystal-clear high definition, dividing into three synchronized video feeds.

The first video played the sunroom footage: Rachel deliberately sweeping her elbow to knock the hot tea onto the antique rug, sneering down at Maya as the young woman cleaned it on her knees.

A collective gasp of shock rippled through the hundred guests.

Rachel took an involuntary step backward, her face draining of color. "That... that was an accident! She was clumsy!"

David pressed the remote again.

The second video played: Rachel using a copied brass key to open Evelyn’s rosewood medicine chest, removing the three bottles of prescription digitalis, slipping them into her handbag, and replacing them with white calcium tablets.

Arthur Carter gasped, clutching his chest, staring at the screen in paralyzed, horrifying disbelief. "Rachel... my mother's heart medication?"

David pressed the remote a third time.

An audio recording filled the cavernous ballroom—a phone call intercepted between Rachel and Julian Montgomery forty-eight hours prior:

Julian: "The calcium swap was brilliant, Rachel. If Evelyn suffers a mild coronary episode during the reception, Arthur will be too devastated to question the durable power-of-attorney filing on Monday."

Rachel: "Make sure the Atlanta notary has the papers ready. Once Maya is blamed for the missing digitalis, the police will lock her up, and the sixty-million-dollar foundation trust is entirely ours."

The silence in the Quail Hollow ballroom was absolute, suffocating, and terrifying.
