Chapter 7 - The Downfall of the Montgomerys

Rachel stood in the center of the parquet floor, her emerald dress trembling violently against her knees.
The sophisticated, high-society facade that had charmed Charlotte’s elite for two years had completely disintegrated into the raw, cornered malice of a predator whose traps had closed upon herself.
"It’s a fake!" Rachel shrieked, her voice cracking into a shrill, manic pitch as she turned wildly toward the guests. "David manipulated those videos! He’s trying to humiliate me because he doesn't want to share his inheritance! Julian, tell them!"
Julian Montgomery didn't say a word. He turned on his heel, attempting to sprint toward the service exits, but the heavy double doors were pushed open from the outside.
Standing in the doorway was Detective Frank Callahan of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, flanked by four armed tactical officers and Frank Vance.
"Julian Montgomery, Rachel Montgomery," Detective Callahan announced, his deep voice cutting through the room like an iron blade. "You are under arrest pursuant to warrants issued by the Mecklenburg County Superior Court. Charges include: Attempted Reckless Endangerment of an Elder, Grand Larceny of Controlled Substances, Criminal Forgery, and Conspiracy to Commit Corporate Fraud."
Arthur Carter walked slowly over to where Rachel stood.
The sixty-year-old patriarch looked broken, his hands shaking as he stared at the woman he had nearly welcomed as a daughter.
"You tried to poison my mother," Arthur whispered, tears of profound horror leaking from his eyes. "You smiled in my house, drank my wine, and tried to kill my mother for a trust fund."
"You old fool!" Rachel spat, her face contorted in pure, unvarnished venom as the female officer stepped behind her with steel handcuffs. "You and your pathetic little empire! You were going to leave everything to an ungrateful son who cares more about servants than his own class!"
David walked down from the podium, stopping two paces from her.
He reached out, pulled the five-carat diamond engagement ring from her trembling finger, and dropped it into an empty champagne bucket on the side table with a sharp, hollow metallic clink.

"My mother was a servant, Rachel," David said softly, his voice devoid of anger, carrying only the absolute finality of justice. "And she was worth ten thousand of you."
As the officers dragged Rachel and Julian out of the ballroom in chains, their frantic, echoing curses faded down the hallway until the heavy mahogany doors slammed shut forever.
