Chapter 10 - The Sovereign LedgerOne year after the morning of the setup, the winter sun rose over the city in a brilliant, blinding wash of liquid gold, burning the morning frost off the asphalt loading docks until the shipping containers sparkled like a field of crushed diamonds.

At 8:30 a.m., the digital clock on my dual-monitor setup clicked to life in the top-floor corner office of Apex Global Logistics.

8:30:00 AM.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, the commuter traffic was flowing smoothly across the interstate bridge.

I stood by the glass, holding a ceramic mug of dark roast coffee, looking down at the bustling stream of supply chain trucks moving along the docks below.

My phone buzzed softly on the mahogany desk.

It was a secure email notification from the federal parole board:

OFFICIAL PAROLE REVIEW DENIED: INMATE #44812-099 (VANCE, DAVID)

REASON: UNCONTRITION, SEVERE RISK OF REOFFENSE, PERMANENT BAR FROM CORPORATE GOVERNANCE.

I swiped the notification away, locked the screen, and placed the phone back down on the polished wood.

The past was a closed file, archived in an unalterable database that required no further review.

The double doors of my office clicked open.

Sarah Jenkins and Arthur Miller stepped inside, holding fresh pastries and steaming cups of coffee, laughing as they debated the architecture for our upcoming international expansion into the European logistics market.

I turned away from the window, walked out of my office, and joined my team in the center of the executive bullpen.

The ledgers were balanced. The system was secure.

And as the morning sunlight flooded the office, the horizon belonged entirely to the truth.
