Chapter 6 - The Corner Office

By 1:00 p.m., my transition from shift manager in the freezing distribution hub to Director of Supply Chain Security on the top floor of Apex Global Logistics was complete.
My new office was a cathedral of brushed steel, acoustic glass, and floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows that offered an unobstructed view of the shipping port and the glittering city skyline beyond.
There were no humming fluorescent lights, no stale cardboard boxes, and no ticking time bombs hidden in the architecture.
I stood by the glass, holding a ceramic mug of dark roast coffee, looking down at the loading docks far below where the morning's chaos had played out.
A soft knock sounded on my open door.
I turned around. Sarah Jenkins stood there, holding a thick leather-bound folder containing the preliminary forensic audit reports of David Vance’s offshore accounts.
"Marcus," Sarah smiled, stepping into the office and setting the folder on my new mahogany desk. "The federal investigators are currently executing search warrants on David’s residential properties in the suburbs. They've already uncovered three offshore bank accounts funded by systematic inventory diversion. Your old nemesis is looking at a minimum of fifteen years in a federal penitentiary."
"Good," I said, walking over to the desk and sitting down in the leather executive chair. "Let the federal prosecutors handle the criminal side. Our job is to make sure our supply chain is mathematically bulletproof so nobody can ever pull a stunt like that again."
Sarah nodded, her expression turning serious. "Speaking of which... we've reviewed the security protocols across all twelve regional distribution hubs. We're implementing dual-authentication biometric keypads, immutable blockchain inventory tracking, and AI-driven anomaly detection for every high-value vault in the network."

"Make it happen, Sarah," I instructed. "Spare no expense. If it costs ten thousand dollars in software upgrades to prevent a forty-thousand-dollar theft and a ruined human life, it’s the best investment this company will ever make."
"Way ahead of you," Sarah smiled, turning toward the door. "I'll get the engineering team on it right away."
