Chapter 7 - The Unbreakable Ledger

The rest of the week passed with the smooth, hypnotic efficiency of a well-oiled machine.
With David Vance behind bars and the corporate culture thoroughly purged of its corrupt elements, Apex Global Logistics experienced a renaissance of transparency and operational integrity. Employee morale soared, turnover dropped to near zero, and our regional distribution hubs set new efficiency records three weeks in a row.
On Friday afternoon, I stood by my office window, watching the sunset paint the sky in brilliant shades of violet and gold.
My phone buzzed on the desk.
It was an automated notification from the federal prosecutor’s office:
INDICTMENT CONFIRMED: UNITED STATES V. VANCE, DAVID.
CHARGES: GRAND LARCENY, WIRE FRAUD, PERJURY, CONSPIRACY.
STATUS: TRIAL DATE SET FOR DECEMBER 1ST. BAIL DENIED.
I swiped the notification away, locked the screen, and placed the phone back down on the polished wood.
The past was a closed file, archived in an unalterable database that required no further review.
The double doors of my office clicked open.
My new administrative assistant stepped inside, holding a fresh schedule and a stack of compliance reports.
I turned away from the window, walked out of my office, and joined my team in the center of the executive bullpen.

The ledgers were balanced. The system was secure.
And as the weekend approached, the horizon belonged entirely to the truth.
