Chapter 10 - The Horizon We Built

The sun began its slow, majestic descent into the western hills, painting the Massachusetts sky in breathtaking ribbons of gold, violet, and deep crimson. The evening breeze blew gentle and cool across the valley, carrying the sweet scent of blooming lilacs and the distant, happy laughter of neighbors down the street.

We sat together on the wide wooden back porch swing, swaying gently back and forth in the fading twilight.

Thomas rested his head comfortably against mine, our fingers interlaced tightly, the silver pocket watch resting safely on the wooden side table beside us.

Across the lawn, past the white picket fence, the world was moving on. Arthur Sterling was sitting in a federal maximum-security cell hundreds of miles away, spending his days scrubbing floors and reflecting on a life of unmitigated greed and cruelty. His name had become a cautionary tale in corporate boardrooms across the country—a stark reminder that no matter how high you build your throne of lies, the truth will always find a way to tear it down.

But out here, in the quiet warmth of our home, none of that mattered.

"Are you warm enough, Rebecca?" Thomas asked softly, pressing a tender kiss to my temple.

"I'm more than warm, Thomas," I replied, closing my eyes and taking a deep, uninhibited breath of the evening air. "I'm completely, perfectly home."

Thomas smiled, tightening his embrace as the first brilliant stars of the evening began to pierce the twilight sky. The storm had passed. The wreckage had been cleared away. And the horizon stretching out before us was wide, open, and endlessly bright.
