Chapter 2 - The Stumble of Fate

I pressed my back against the wall, listening with agonizing intensity as Arthur’s heavy footsteps intercepted the intruder in the hallway just outside our bedroom door.

"Chloe? What in God's name are you doing wandering around at two in the morning?" Arthur’s voice was pitched in a harsh, controlled hiss, clearly trying to keep from waking the rest of the household staff.

"Ugh, back off, old man," slurred Chloe Sterling, my twenty-four-year-old sister-in-law, whose penchant for expensive scotch and late-night pill-popping was an open secret the family desperately tried to conceal from society columns. "I dropped my phone charger in the drawing-room, and my head is killing me. Do you have any painkillers? Real ones, not that aspirin garbage."

"Go back to your room, Chloe. You're a mess," Arthur ordered, his voice laced with absolute disgust.

"Oh, shut up," Chloe snapped back, her footsteps shuffling closer to the master bedroom threshold. "You're always so uptight. What are you even doing in Thomas and Rebecca's room anyway? Ooh... is that juice? My throat is drier than a desert."

My breath caught in my throat. My eyes widened in the dim light.

I heard the distinct sound of rustling fabric, a sharp intake of breath from Arthur as he tried to block her path, and then the unmistakable clink of crystal.

"Wait, Chloe, don't touch that—" Arthur barked, his usual icy composure finally cracking into genuine panic.

"Get off me!" Chloe laughed, a high, obnoxious sound. "God, you're stingy with everything, even fruit punch."

A split second later, a loud, collective gasp echoed from the doorway, followed by the sound of glass shattering against the floorboards. But it wasn't the tumbler that had broken—it was something else.

"There! Are you happy? You made me spill it!" Chloe whined loudly. Then, her tone shifted, becoming petulant and demanding. "If you won't let me drink that, get me something else. Bring me a fresh glass of whatever you had on that vanity right now, or I'll scream until Mother wakes up."

Arthur let out a low, dangerous growl. I could hear the wheels turning in his cold, calculating mind. He needed Chloe gone, he needed her quiet, and he needed her out of the way so he could finish what he had started with me.

"Fine," Arthur muttered, his voice dripping with poisonous compliance. "Wait right here. I'll get you a fresh glass."

I slipped silently toward the shadows of the walk-in closet, my heart pounding in my throat, peering through the slight crack in the door. I watched as Arthur re-entered the bedroom. His face was a mask of cold fury. He walked over to a small mini-fridge hidden inside a wooden cabinet near the wet bar, pulled out a fresh carton of orange juice, and poured it into a clean glass.

Then, with lightning-fast precision, he reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a small glass vial, and emptied every single drop of the remaining white powder and amber liquid into the fresh glass, stirring it thoroughly with a silver cocktail spoon.

He didn't hesitate. He didn't blink. He handed the fresh, spiked glass to Chloe, who was leaning heavily against the doorframe in her silk nightgown.

"Here," Arthur said smoothly. "Drink it all. And don't spill this one."

"Ugh, finally," Chloe mumbled. She grabbed the glass, tilted her head back, and downed the entire contents in three long, greedy gulps, never pausing to taste the almond bitterness masked by the citrus. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, handed the empty glass back to Arthur with a stupid grin, and muttered, "Thanks, old man. Night."

She turned around, shuffling unsteadily down the hallway toward her wing of the mansion.

I watched through the crack in the closet door as Arthur stood in the middle of the bedroom, watching her retreating back with a cold, triumphant smirk. He turned off the bedside lamp, plunging the room into shadows, and whispered to himself, "Goodnight, Chloe. Sleep well."

He walked out of the room, heading downstairs to dispose of the evidence, leaving the master suite entirely quiet once more.
