Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

"Looking for me, Arthur?"
My voice echoed sharply through the master bedroom, cutting through the silence like a gunshot.
Arthur whipped around so fast he nearly lost his footing on the scattered goose feathers. His eyes bulged as he spotted me standing not in the bed, but leaning casually against the open doorframe of the master bathroom, holding my phone steady in my right hand, the camera light casting a bright, unforgiving beam directly onto his pale, panic-stricken face.
"You..." Arthur choked out, dropping the heavy brass fireplace poker with a deafening clatter against the floorboards. "You were in the bathroom the whole time?"
"I was," I replied, my voice remarkably steady, devoid of the terror he expected to see. "I slipped in there the moment you went downstairs to get Chloe's fresh drink. I watched you poison your own daughter, Arthur. And thanks to modern technology, my phone recorded your little confession in the hallway, your murder of Chloe, and your brutal assault on an empty pillow."
Arthur’s face turned the color of ash. He took a staggering step backward, his hands trembling as he realized he had fallen right into a masterclass trap. The cold, untouchable patriarch of the Sterling empire was gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered rat realizing the cage door had just slammed shut.
"Give me that phone, Rebecca," Arthur demanded, his voice dropping into a frantic, dangerous snarl. He lunged forward, closing the distance between us with terrifying speed, his hands outstretched to grab the device from my grip.
But I wasn't standing still anymore.
I stepped backward into the brightly lit bathroom, slamming the heavy wooden door shut right in his face.
BANG!
Arthur’s shoulder slammed against the exterior of the bathroom door, splintering the wood around the deadbolt. "Open this door right now, you ungrateful little whore! You think this will save you?! I own the police! I own the judges! Nobody will ever see that video!"
"You might own the local police, Arthur," I called out loudly, my fingers flying across my screen as I hit send on the encrypted cloud backup, transmitting the raw video file directly to Thomas’s personal cell phone, as well as to the federal prosecutor's office in Boston. "But federal marshals don't take bribes from local real estate moguls. And guess what? The upload is complete."
Outside the bathroom door, Arthur’s frantic pounding abruptly stopped.
A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the master suite, broken only by the sound of my own steady breathing and the patter of the gentle rain outside the window.
"What... what did you just do?" Arthur whispered through the cracked wood of the door, his voice laced with absolute, paralyzing dread.
"I sent it to Thomas," I said, opening the bathroom door slowly and stepping out to face him. "And I sent a copy to the Department of Justice. By the time Thomas's flight lands at Logan Airport in six hours, federal agents will be waiting on the tarmac to arrest you for corporate espionage, embezzlement, and the premeditated murder of your own daughter."
Arthur stared at me, his mouth moving silently, his knees finally buckling beneath him. He sank slowly to the floor, resting his back against the wall beside Chloe’s lifeless body, defeated by his own boundless cruelty.

"You ruined us," Arthur whispered, tears of pure rage and self-pity spilling down his cheeks. "You destroyed the Sterling legacy."
"No, Arthur," I looked down at him with absolute pity. "You destroyed it yourself. I just recorded the ending."
