On a bright Saturday afternoon, Clara sat on a wooden bench beneath the shade of a massive oak tree in the backyard.
Leo and Julian were playing catch on the emerald lawn, their laughter echoing across the grass. Don walked out from the back patio carrying a tray with a pitcher of iced lemonade and two glasses, walking over to join her.
He handed a glass to Clara and sat down beside her on the bench.
“How are the legal briefs looking for the new youth foundation?” Don asked, smiling.
“Everything is signed and sealed,” Clara replied, taking a sip of the cool lemonade. “The first community center opens downtown next month. Fully funded, fully staffed, and dedicated to supporting families in crisis.”
Don reached over, taking her hand. “Your mother would have been so proud of you.”
“She taught me that no matter how dark things get, truth always finds a way to the surface,” Clara said softly, looking out across the lawn where Leo had just caught a baseball and was cheering triumphantly.
