Chapter 9 - The Strength of a Mother

Later that evening, after the dishes were cleared and little Leo had finally fallen asleep upstairs clutching his favorite toy, Clara stepped out onto the wide stone balcony overlooking the moonlit gardens.
The night air was crisp and cool, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine and wet earth.
Footsteps approached softly from behind, and a warm cashmere jacket draped gently over her shoulders. Don wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder as they looked out over the sprawling estate.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Don murmured softly against her ear.
Clara leaned back into his embrace, resting her hands over his. “I was just thinking about that night in the ballroom. About how terrified I was when Helen raised her hand against Leo.”
Don tightened his arms around her, a shudder running through his frame. “You risked everything by stepping into the open like that. You didn't have to shield him.”
“Yes, I did,” Clara said firmly, turning her head to look into his eyes. “When you spend twenty-two years watching your firstborn get hidden away, and then you’re given a second chance to protect a child... you don't calculate the risk, Don. You just act.”
Don kissed the top of her head, his eyes shining in the moonlight. “You are the strongest woman I have ever known, Clara. I spent decades surrounded by wealth, power, and high society, but I was living in a desert. You brought life back into this house.”

“We brought it back together,” Clara corrected gently.
They stood together in silence for a long time, watching the silver moonlight dance across the leaves of the garden below. The past could not be rewritten, and the pain of the lost years could never be completely erased; but looking forward, the path ahead was clear, bright, and built on a foundation that no amount of lies could ever shake again.
