Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Queen

The reality of total, unmitigated ruin finally settled over Helen Sterling.

She looked around the grand ballroom—the sparkling chandeliers, the imported marble floors, the expensive orchids, and the hundreds of society friends who were now actively turning their backs, whispering frantically as they hurried toward the exits to distance themselves from the sinking ship.

Her life's work, built on deception, manipulation, and cruelty, had vanished in less than thirty minutes.

“You can’t do this to me,” Helen whispered, her voice breaking into a pathetic whine. She lunged forward, reaching out a shaking hand toward Don. “Don! Please! After all these years! We built this together! You can't throw me out for a cheap maid and a bastard brat!”

Don didn't even flinch. He stepped back, keeping Clara and Leo safely behind him.

“You never built anything, Helen,” Don said quietly. “You only occupied space that didn't belong to you.”

At a subtle gesture from Julian, two federal marshals in dark suits stepped quietly through the side doors, walking purposefully across the marble floor. They stopped on either side of Helen, their presence quiet, immovable, and absolute.

“Mrs. Sterling,” the lead marshal said politely, placing a hand lightly on her elbow. “You need to come with us.”

Helen didn't scream anymore. The fight had completely drained out of her, leaving behind a hollow, shrunken shell of the proud matriarch who had terrorized her household for decades. Without another word, she allowed the marshals to guide her away, her designer heels clicking hollowly against the marble floor as she was led out of the grand ballroom and away from the empire she had stolen.

The heavy mahogany doors closed behind her with a dull, echoing thud.

Silence settled over the ballroom once more—not the suffocating tension of before, but a clean, sweeping quiet that felt like the aftermath of a violent summer storm.
