Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Doors Open

The executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Sterling-Vance Global was a masterclass in corporate intimidation. Encased in soundproof glass, the room featured a twenty-seat mahogany table carved from a single ancient oak tree, surrounded by twelve of the most powerful, ruthless financial minds on the eastern seaboard.
At the head of the table sat Julian Vance—acting CEO, nephew of the founder, and a man whose ambition was matched only by his utter lack of ethics. Julian was currently checking his gold Rolex, tapping his pen against a leather-bound briefing folder with mounting irritation.
"We are twenty minutes past the scheduled hour," Julian announced loudly, looking around the table at the restless directors. "My uncle’s private jet experienced weather delays in Europe. As acting CEO, I move that we bypass the remote satellite protocol and proceed with the Meridian Acquisition vote immediately. All in favor?"
Several directors raised their hands, eager to push through the multi-billion-dollar corporate merger before Arthur Sterling could return from London to scrutinize the fine print.
Before Julian could strike his gavel, the heavy double doors at the rear of the boardroom swung open.
The room fell instantly silent.
Julian frowned, preparing to chew out whichever junior assistant had dared interrupt a quorum vote. But the words died in his throat when he saw who walked through the threshold.
It wasn't just Elizabeth Sterling.
It was Arthur Sterling.
He looked tired, his silver hair slightly damp, his heavy wool overcoat still carrying the damp chill of the Manhattan streets. But his eyes—the sharp, piercing blue eyes that had built a global empire from the ground up—were blazing with an unholy fire.
And walking right beside him, carrying a yellow mop bucket and wearing a stained blue maintenance polo with the name tag ETHAN, was a seventeen-year-old boy.
Julian jumped to his feet, knocking his leather chair backward with a sharp screech against the parquet floor.
"Uncle Arthur?!" Julian stammered, his face turning a sickly, pale green. "You... you're here? We were told your flight was grounded in London! Security said—"
"Security downstairs almost murdered me on the front steps, Julian," Arthur said, his voice cutting through the cavernous room like a razor. He walked slowly toward the head of the table, leaning heavily on his cane with every step.
Arthur stopped behind Julian’s chair, glaring down at his nephew with open contempt.
"Get out of my seat," Arthur whispered.
Julian’s breath caught. He looked around the table for support, but the other twelve directors had suddenly found their briefing folders immensely fascinating, staring down at their papers without making a sound.
Humiliated and terrified, Julian scrambled out of the leather chair, retreating two steps back like a whipped dog.
Arthur slowly lowered himself into the head seat. He didn't open his briefcase. He didn't look at the Meridian Acquisition portfolio. Instead, he gestured with his chin toward the young man standing near the door.
"Ethan," Arthur called out gently. "Bring your bucket over here. Sit down."
May you like
Ethan stood frozen by the double doors, clutching the handle of his mop like a lifeline. "Sir... Mr. Sterling... I don't belong in here. Look at my shoes. I’m tracking mud on the carpet."
"Sit down, Ethan," Arthur repeated, his voice dropping into a tone that brooked no argument. "The floor is washable. Integrity is much harder to clean once it's stained."
