Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

By the following year, Ethan had enrolled as a freshman at Columbia University while continuing his executive role at Sterling-Vance Global—a dual path made possible by Arthur’s unwavering mentorship and the flexible logistics schedule of the corporate office.
His mother’s health had improved dramatically, thanks to the comprehensive medical coverage provided by the firm and a cozy, sunlit apartment in Queens that finally stayed warm through the harsh winter months.
On a crisp, bright autumn afternoon exactly one year after the rainy night that had changed his life, Ethan walked through the revolving brass doors of the Sterling-Vance atrium.
The rain was falling outside again, tapping against the thick glass panels, but inside, the lobby was warm, bright, and filled with the gentle hum of people helping people.
Ethan wore his custom navy suit, his briefcase in hand, nodding respectfully to the security guards at the front desk, who smiled and waved back with genuine warmth.
He didn't take the stairs this time. He walked straight to the private executive elevator bank, swiped his gold access card, and rode the smooth, pneumatic lift upward toward the forty-fifth floor.
As the doors slid open, revealing the grand boardroom where billionaires negotiated the fate of global markets, Ethan paused for a fraction of a second.
He remembered what it felt like to hold a grey rag, terrified of losing a minimum-wage job that kept his family from freezing in the dark. He remembered the cold marble, the shouting security guards, and the frail stranger on the floor who had changed everything with five simple words.

Delay the board vote. I’m downstairs.
He smiled to himself, stepped out onto the polished parquet floor, and walked into a future that nothing in this world could ever shake.
