Chapter 5 - The Audit of Julian Vance

The silence in the boardroom was so profound you could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning vents in the ceiling.
Julian Vance stood by the side of the table, his hands trembling as he tried to regain his composure. He forced a strained, oily smile onto his face, leaning forward slightly.
"Well, Uncle Arthur... this is certainly an unconventional guest for an emergency board meeting," Julian chuckled nervously, looking around the table for allies. "I assume the boy got lost on his way down to the basement annex. Let me have building security escort him out so we can get back to the Meridian vote."
Arthur Sterling didn't look at his nephew. He pulled a heavy, encrypted flash drive from his pocket and slid it across the mahogany table toward Elizabeth Sterling.
"Elizabeth," Arthur said quietly. "Load the Boston port audits onto the main display."
Elizabeth inserted the drive into the media console. Instantly, the massive, wall-mounted projection screen flickered to life, illuminating the boardroom in a stark, blinding white light.
Instead of financial spreadsheets for the Meridian Acquisition, the screen displayed a dense web of shell companies, offshore wire transfers, and internal corporate emails bearing Julian Vance’s digital signature.
Julian’s face went from pale green to absolute chalk.
"What... what is this?" Julian choked out, taking a frantic step toward the screen. "This is a fabrication! These files are corrupted!"
"They are real, Julian," Arthur said, his voice cold as a glacier. "For the past fourteen months, while I was overseas overseeing our European expansion, you used your position as acting CEO to quietly siphon forty-two million dollars in infrastructure subsidies into private accounts in the Cayman Islands."
Arthur leaned forward, resting his weathered hands on the table.
"You falsified environmental compliance reports for the Boston port terminal, putting thousands of dockworkers at risk. And worse... you arranged to fast-track the Meridian vote today specifically to ram through a buyout before I could return to audit the books."
The twelve directors began murmuring anxiously, papers rustling as they realized the magnitude of the corporate treason unfolding before them.
Julian spun around, looking desperately at the board members. "He’s lying! My uncle is old! His health is failing—he collapsed in the lobby twenty minutes ago, everyone knows he’s hallucinating! He’s trying to protect his legacy by destroying mine!"
"I collapsed because I had a mild angina attack in a freezing rainstorm," Arthur stated, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying clarity. "An attack brought on by exhaustion. And do you know what happened while I lay unconscious on the marble floor of my own building, Julian?"
Arthur pointed a shaking, weathered finger directly at Ethan, who sat quietly near the back of the room.
"This seventeen-year-old boy—a kid making minimum wage scrubbing your floors—risked his job to keep me alive. While your chief security officer tried to throw me out like garbage, Ethan gave me water, stayed by my side, and showed me more human decency than you have displayed in your entire miserable life."
Arthur stood up from his chair, leaning fully on his cane, towering over the boardroom.
"Security," Arthur commanded.

The double doors swung open instantly. Chief Security Officer Vance—the man who had tried to toss Arthur out into the rain—stepped into the room, flanked by two federal marshals in tactical gear.
"Julian Vance," Arthur declared, the gavel of his voice falling like an executioner's blade. "You are stripped of all executive authority, your corporate shares are frozen under federal investigation, and you are hereby placed under citizen’s arrest for corporate embezzlement and fraud. Take him away."
