Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Vance

The arrest of Julian Vance sent a seismic shockwave through the financial district that would make front-page news across the country by morning.

Within minutes of the federal marshals hauling Julian and Chief Security Officer Vance out of the boardroom in handcuffs, the emergency consolidation vote was officially canceled. The board of directors voted unanimously to place Arthur Sterling back in absolute, unhindered control of Sterling-Vance Global, while federal forensic accountants descended upon the executive offices to audit every file, server, and ledger in the building.

Back in the boardroom, the frantic energy had settled into a quiet, respectful hum.

Most of the directors had filed out, leaving only Elizabeth Sterling, Arthur, and Ethan sitting around the massive mahogany table.

Ethan felt entirely out of place. He had removed his wet maintenance polo, now wearing a simple white undershirt, holding a paper cup of warm black coffee that Elizabeth had kindly brought him from the executive lounge.

Arthur sat at the head of the table, looking considerably better now that color had returned to his cheeks. He took a slow sip of his own tea, looking across the table at the teenager.

"Well, Ethan," Arthur said, a warm, grandfatherly smile breaking through the stern lines of his face. "You certainly had a more eventful Tuesday evening than you planned."

"I was just trying to do my job, Mr. Sterling," Ethan said quietly, keeping his eyes on his paper cup. "Well... technically, I was trying to do a job I wasn't even supposed to be doing."

"You went above and beyond basic human decency, son," Elizabeth Sterling added, sitting beside him and placing a supportive hand on his shoulder. "Chief Vance and Julian have created a toxic culture in this building for years. Today, you helped us lance a very deep, infected wound."

Arthur reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a sleek, gold-engraved business card, sliding it across the polished mahogany toward Ethan.

"What is this?" Ethan asked, picking up the card.

"It’s my private direct line," Arthur said. "And below it is the executive contact for our corporate scholarship foundation. As of tonight, your maintenance contract with Sterling-Vance is officially terminated."

Ethan’s heart dropped into his stomach. For a terrifying second, he thought he was being fired after all. "Sir? I... I didn't do anything wrong—"

"You're not fired, Ethan," Arthur laughed softly. "You're promoted. You are no longer scrubbing our floors. Starting tomorrow morning, you are enrolled as a full-time intern in our executive logistics department, with a starting salary of sixty thousand dollars a year, full medical benefits for your mother, and a four-year, tuition-paid scholarship to any university in New York State."

Ethan stared at the card. The numbers blurred before his eyes. Sixty thousand dollars. Medical benefits for his mother’s inhalers. College tuition paid for. The crushing weight of rent, bills, and survival that had weighed on his seventeen-year-old shoulders for years suddenly vanished into thin air.

"I... I don't know what to say, Mr. Sterling," Ethan choked out, a hot tear spilling over his eyelashes. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

"Don't thank me, Ethan," Arthur said, standing up and leaning heavily on his cane, walking over to place a warm, heavy hand on the boy's shoulder. "Thank your mother for raising a good son. Now go home, get some rest, and tell her that her rent is paid for the next ten years."
