Chapter 4 - The Midnight Extraction

By 11:30 p.m., the grand ballroom of the Providence Biltmore had been cleared of all non-essential guests and placed under strict federal and municipal administrative receivership.

Four armed tactical operators from Ferraro Sovereign Security stood guard at the main entrance, while sixteen forensic accountants from Deloitte and three digital recovery specialists from the State Attorney General’s office worked in the executive suites upstairs.

Inside the presidential library on the eighteenth floor, a roaring fire crackled in the marble hearth.

Rosalind Ferraro lay resting on a wide velvet chaise lounge beneath a heated cashmere blanket, sipping warm chamomile tea. Her head was covered by a soft, elegant silk turban Clara had tied for her with gentle, practiced hands.

Clara sat on a low ottoman beside the chaise, reviewing unsealed probate files on an encrypted tablet.

Antonio stood by the panoramic windows overlooking the glittering, rain-slicked skyline of Providence and the dark, deep waters of Narragansett Bay below. He wore a fresh black dress shirt with the collar open, his sleeves rolled to his forearms, holding a crystal glass of sparkling water.

"How does the head feel, Mom?" Antonio asked softly, turning away from the glass.

"My head is clear, Antonio," Rosalind answered, her voice rich with peaceful authority. "For the first time in ten years, the air in this city feels clean."

She reached out, resting her warm hand over Clara’s fingers on the tablet.

"Look at the ledger, Clara," Rosalind said gently. "Show Antonio what you found in the Albright server backups."

Clara rotated the tablet, illuminating the financial routing nodes.

"Point one," Clara explained, her voice sharp and clinical. "Over the past twenty-four months, Richard Albright and Vanessa systematically embezzled fifty-four million dollars from the port worker pension fund, funneling the cash through three shell entities in Grand Cayman: Apex Harbor Logistics, Meridian Maritime LLC, and Sterling Marine Trust."

"And the reason for the rush to execute the wedding tonight?" Antonio asked, stepping to the table.

"The federal receivership was scheduled to freeze Albright Shipping’s credit lines at midnight," Clara revealed. "Julian Sterling—the syndicate broker from Boston—held forty million dollars in defaulted Albright mezzanine debt. Vanessa planned to use Charlie’s signature on the marital merger to pledge your deepwater container berths as collateral, bail out her father's firm, and leave your family with eighty million dollars in unsecured liabilities."

Antonio’s jaw hardened into pure, unbreakable granite.

He looked at Clara—at her calm, intelligent hazel eyes, her steady hands, and the quiet, sovereign courage she had carried through seven years of poverty and grief.

"Arthur," Antonio spoke into the warm room.

Arthur Ross stepped forward from the study door. "Yes, Antonio?"

"Draft the master unsealing petition for the Federal Grand Jury at dawn. Execute the complete forfeiture of Albright Shipping’s operating licenses pursuant to Section Twelve of the Vance Charter. And notify the Port Authority that Clara Vance will be presiding over the harbor commission assembly in person."
