Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Albright Syndicate

Eight months later, the central ceremonial courtroom of the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island in Providence was packed to absolute capacity.
Over three hundred journalists, maritime labor union leaders, financial analysts, and civic leaders sat in the public gallery, their eyes fixed on the defense table where Richard Albright, Vanessa Albright, and Julian Sterling sat in standard khaki federal inmate jumpsuits.
Richard Albright looked thirty years older. His styled vanity had been completely stripped away, his hands trembling continuously against the oak table as Chief Federal Prosecutor Sarah Lin systematically presented over five hundred exhibits: the unsealed Biltmore security recordings, the decrypted Grand Cayman wire logs, the recovered Thomas Vance survey registers, and the forensic banking extractions from Arthur Ross.
When the high-definition security footage from the Biltmore ballroom—capturing the exact moment Vanessa ripped the wig from Rosalind Ferraro’s head while her bridesmaids laughed—was projected onto the thirty-foot courtroom screens, a collective roar of revulsion and fury echoed through the gallery.
Judge Katherine Thornton adjusted her spectacles and read from the comprehensive sentencing memorandum with absolute, unyielding severity.
"On forty-eight counts of federal enterprise racketeering under the RICO Act, grand corporate fraud, interstate wire fraud, and the felonious framing of Thomas Vance, the jury finds the defendants Richard Albright, Vanessa Albright, and Julian Sterling guilty on all counts," Judge Thornton read, her voice ringing through the breathless chamber like a tolling bell.
The judge paused, letting the crushing weight of the verdict settle over the silent room.
"Richard Albright is hereby sentenced to thirty-five years of imprisonment in a maximum-security federal correctional facility, with zero possibility of parole before twenty-eight years."
"Vanessa Albright is sentenced to twenty-six years of federal imprisonment."
"Julian Sterling is sentenced to thirty-two years of federal imprisonment."
"Furthermore, pursuant to the federal civil asset forfeiture statutes, the entirety of the defendants' residual personal accounts, luxury real estate, and corporate holdings—totaling one hundred and fourteen million dollars—are hereby forfeited to the Thomas Vance and Rosalind Ferraro Restitution and Worker Welfare Trust."
The heavy wooden gavel struck the sound block with a sharp, definitive crack that sounded like the closing of an iron vault.
Vanessa slumped forward onto the defense table, letting out a dry, broken wail as two federal marshals pulled his arms back, securing the heavy transport chains around her waist and ankles.
As they were led through the side prisoner exit, their hollow, bloodshot eyes caught Clara’s where she sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Antonio Ferraro’s hand, with Rosalind Ferraro and Arthur Ross sitting proudly beside them.
Clara did not look at them with hatred, nor did she flinch. She sat tall, her posture calm, dignified, and regal, watching the people who had tried to bury her father’s name being hauled away into the dark where they could never harm another human soul.
Antonio squeezed her hand, his gray eyes shining with tears of boundless, unshakeable peace.

"It is finished, Clara," Antonio whispered.
"It is finished, my love," Clara answered softly. "Now we build our sanctuary."
