Chapter 7 - The Visitor in the Federal Ward

The subterranean detention ward of the Donald W. Wyatt Federal Detention Facility in Central Falls smelled of industrial floor wax, cold concrete, and bitter, rotting pride.

Vanessa Albright sat on the edge of a stainless-steel cot bolted to the wall of her solitary cell, wearing an oversized orange institutional jumpsuit.

Her expensive manicure had been chipped down to the quick; her styled blonde hair was unwashed, hanging in stringy tangles across her pale, sallow face. Her wrists and ankles were secured with heavy steel transport chains.

The heavy steel slider door buzzed open with a loud hydraulic clank.

Antonio Ferraro walked into the cell.

He did not hurry. His leather dress boots clicked rhythmically against the concrete with a slow, deliberate cadence. He wore an elegant dark charcoal wool overcoat over his three-piece suit, his posture commanding, sovereign, and entirely unbothered.

Vanessa flinched back against the concrete wall, her bloodshot eyes widening in a mixture of feral hatred and visceral terror.

"You came to gloat, Antonio," Vanessa spat, her voice cracking into a dry, hoarse rasp.

"I came to look at you, Vanessa," Antonio said softly, stopping three paces from the cot. "I wanted to see what eighteen months of stolen vanity looked like when the couture gown was finally stripped away."

"You were nothing without my family's social standing, Antonio!" Vanessa hissed, leaping to his feet, her transport chains rattling violently against the steel belt around her waist. "You were a thuggish dock boss who hid behind legitimate businesses! I gave your family entry into the finest country clubs in New England! I was supposed to be the First Lady of the Ferraro empire! You threw it away for a catering servant!"

"You didn't build an empire, Vanessa," Antonio replied, his slate-gray eyes locking onto hers with freezing clarity. "You pulled the hair from the head of a cancer survivor at a public altar because you thought cruelty was power. You stole fifty-four million dollars from working men's pensions, framed an honest engineer, and tried to use my brother to loot my house. You believed that because Clara was quiet, she was defenseless. You believed that because my mother was sick, she had no protector."

Antonio reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a copy of the morning's unsealed federal grand jury indictment.

He dropped the heavy document onto the steel cot.

"Your father signed a full confession at sunrise, Vanessa," Antonio said. "He detailed every offshore routing token, every forged signature proxy, and the fact that you ordered the framing of Thomas Vance."

Vanessa’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked down at the forty-eight felony counts listed on the parchment, her hands shaking so violently that the paper fluttered against her knees.

"My father... confessed?" she whispered, her voice finally breaking into a pathetic, terrified whimper.

"Richard saved himself, Vanessa," Antonio answered quietly. "Just as you tried to save yourself at my altar. The Albright estate has been completely dismantled by the federal receivership, and your legal defense trust has a balance of zero."

Vanessa collapsed onto the cot, burying her face in her cuffed hands, weeping with the raw, ugly agony of a woman who had realized that her vanity had left her completely alone in the dark.

"Antonio... please," she sobbed through her fingers. "I loved you... in my own way, I loved you... tell Arthur to drop the racketeering counts... I'll sign whatever waiver you want..."

Antonio looked at the broken woman on the cot.

The charming socialite who had smiled across ballroom tables was gone forever, replaced by an empty shell whose cruelty had consumed her own soul.

"You never loved anyone, Vanessa," Antonio whispered softly. "You only loved what you could steal. And now you can spend the rest of your life counting the days in the cold."

Antonio turned his back on the broken conspirator.

May you like

"Guard," Antonio called out.

The heavy steel door slid open, and Antonio walked down the echoing corridor into the bright morning sunshine of Rhode Island, leaving Vanessa Albright to weep in the concrete shadows where she would remain for thirty-two years.
