Chapter 5 - A New Beginning

The days following the interrupted wedding were surprisingly peaceful.
Without the crushing weight of planning an impossible social event or trying to balance Vivienne’s toxic expectations with his duties as a father, Lucas found his focus sharpening. He spent his afternoons playing catch in the backyard with Chloe, baking messy chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen, and reading bedtime stories until they both fell asleep.
The media circus eventually died down, replaced by new scandals and fleeting headlines, while the Sterling name remained protected inside their fortified, sunlit home.
On a bright Saturday morning in late spring, Lucas and Chloe were out in the front garden planting red and yellow tulips along the stone pathway.
The air smelled of damp earth and blooming lilacs.
Chloe wore her favorite denim overalls and a wide-brimmed sunhat, her small hands covered in rich black soil as she carefully dropped bulbs into the holes they had dug together.
“Daddy?” Chloe asked, pausing with her little green trowel in her hand.
“Yes, bug?” Lucas smiled, wiping a smudge of dirt from her nose.
“Are we ever going back to that big party hall?”
Lucas set his trowel down, knelt on the soft grass, and looked deeply into his daughter’s wide, trusting brown eyes.
“Never, sweetheart,” Lucas answered firmly, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. “We don't need big fancy parties. We have our home, we have each other, and nobody is ever going to take you away from me.”
A massive, brilliant smile broke across Chloe’s face. She threw her little dirt-covered arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

“Good. Because my favorite place in the whole world is right here with you.”
Lucas pulled her close, resting his chin on her head, feeling a profound, unshakeable sense of peace settle over his soul. The storm had passed, the deception had been uncovered, and their foundation was stronger than ever.
