Chapter 3 - The Gathering of the Wolves

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a glittering, suffocating monument to stolen wealth and manufactured dynasties.

Twelve towering crystal chandeliers poured warm amber light over four hundred guests dressed in haute couture and bespoke tuxedos. The air was thick with the scent of five thousand imported white gardenias, roasted lamb, vintage champagne, and expensive Cuban cigars.

Every powerful figure in Illinois sat within those four gilded walls: three state senators, five appellate judges, city commissioners, union bosses, and the senior captains of the five Midwest crime families.

At the elevated VIP table near the altar, Donna Isabella Moretti sat draped in emerald velvet and family diamonds, her cold, imperious face radiant with triumph as she accepted toasts from high-society matriarchs.

At the center of the dais stood Adrian Moretti.

At thirty-six, Adrian looked like a modern emperor of shadows. His bespoke black tuxedo was pressed to immaculate perfection, his dark hair brushed back, his slate-gray eyes scanning the room with the casual, dangerous arrogance of a man who believed the world existed entirely to obey his commands.

Beside him stood Valentina Caruso, dressed in a breathtaking, billowing ivory gown with an empire waistline deliberately designed to highlight the soft contour of her stomach. She smiled with sweet, practiced innocence, holding Adrian’s arm as the string quartet played a soft Italian processional.

The heavy double mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom opened.

The chamberlain glanced at the invitation in my hand, blinked in sheer, paralyzed shock, and stepped aside without making an announcement.

I walked down the grand center aisle of the ballroom.

My heels made a crisp, rhythmic click... click... click against the polished parquet.

The string quartet stumbled, the first violinist missing a chord. A low, rolling murmur spread through the four hundred guests like a sudden drop in barometric pressure. Champagne flutes paused in mid-air. Senators turned their heads. Donna Isabella’s face went rigid, her smile disintegrating into pure, venomous disgust.

Adrian froze.

His eyes locked onto me as I walked down the center aisle. For a fraction of a second, his arrogant facade slipped, replaced by an expression of pure, disbelieving shock. He had expected me to arrive broken, weeping, dressed in faded clothes to beg for crumbs from his table.

Instead, I stood before the dais in midnight-blue velvet, radiating the terrifying, unshakeable sovereignty of an executioner stepping onto the scaffold.

"Clara," Adrian said, his baritone slicing through the silence of the room. A mocking, condescending smirk touched his lips as he recovered his footing. "I see you made it. I was worried you wouldn't have the courage to witness what a real family looks like."
