Chapter 6 - The Federal Dragnet

The massive double entrance doors of the ballroom were blown open by concussive hydraulic breaching rams.
Fifty armed federal marshals and tactical operators from the FBI Organized Crime Strike Force swept into the hall in full combat assault gear, carbines raised at the high ready.
At their head strode Special Agent Raymond Callahan, flanked by Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed, carrying four heavy steel cases stamped with the seal of the Department of Justice.
"Nobody move!" Callahan’s voice boomed through the high-decibel PA system, drowning out the screaming guests. "This entire facility is sealed under Federal Executive Order! Every exit is locked! Keep your hands flat on the tables!"
Pandemonium erupted across the room.
Senators and appellate judges scrambled to their feet, dropping their portfolios, while the senior capos of the Moretti and Caruso syndicates reached frantically for concealed weapons—only to find red laser sights instantly painted across their chests from snipers stationed on the mezzanine balconies.
I stepped to the central podium, connecting my master solid-state drive to the hotel’s primary audiovisual feed.
The sixty-foot digital wall illuminated with the master ledger of House Moretti:
The encrypted shipping manifests from the Calumet terminals; the video recordings of Judge Arthur Pendelton accepting two hundred thousand dollars in cash inside a private suite; the banking flowcharts linking fifty million dollars in offshore money laundering to Adrian Moretti’s private accounts in Zurich; and the unredacted forensic reconstruction of prosecutor Daniel Vance’s fatal crash.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Reed stepped onto the marble dais, unsealing a thick stack of blue-backed federal indictments.
"Adrian Moretti, Salvatore Caruso, Valentina Caruso, and Isabella Moretti," Reed announced, his voice echoing through the terrified hall. "Pursuant to warrants issued by the United States District Court, you are under arrest for First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Federal Racketeering under the RICO Act, Public Corruption, Arms Trafficking, and Grand Larceny exceeding two hundred million dollars."
Adrian stood frozen in the center of the marble floor, his tuxedo immaculate, his hair untouched, but his entire criminal empire had been dismantled, forensically audited, and broadcast to the world in less than fifteen minutes.
He looked across the room at me, his eyes wide with raw, agonizing realization.
"You spent eight months building this, Clara," Adrian whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying mixture of awe and total, unmitigated ruin.
"I didn't build this to destroy you, Adrian," I replied softly, my voice steady, cold, and final. "I built this to make sure my daughter would never have to breathe your air."

Two federal marshals stepped forward, twisting Adrian’s arms behind his back, clicking heavy steel transport chains around his wrists.
As the disgraced mob boss was dragged down the center aisle of his own wedding in chains, Donna Isabella wept hysterically at the table, and Valentina was escorted out in tears, I closed my black portfolio, picked up my gown, and walked out into the clean autumn rain.
