Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Altar

I stopped at the base of the marble steps, three feet from where Adrian and Valentina stood.
Valentina took half a step back, her manicured fingers clutching Adrian’s arm, her voice rising in a high, theatrical tremor. "Adrian... darling, why is this woman here? She’s trespassing on our sacred day!"
"I received an invitation, Valentina," I said, my voice calm, clear, and ringing across the silent hall like a silver bell. "From the groom himself. He wanted me to present our family's final settlement."
Donna Isabella surged out of her chair at the VIP table, her diamond bracelets clattering loudly against her crystal plate. "Security! Eject this barren creature from the room! She is an insult to House Moretti!"
"Sit down, Isabella," I said softly without turning my head.
The sheer, freezing authority in my tone made the sixty-year-old matriarch involuntarily halt, her mouth falling open in stunned indignation.
Adrian took two steps down the marble stairs, stopping inches from me, his towering frame casting a dark shadow over my gown. He leaned in, his voice dropping into a low, predatory whisper meant only for me:
"You have five seconds to walk out those doors, Clara," Adrian hissed. "Or my men will drag you to the river. You have nothing. You are nothing."
"I am the woman holding the master key to your kingdom, Adrian," I replied, looking directly into his slate-gray eyes.
I turned around, facing the four hundred silent, watching guests.
I lifted the sleek black leather portfolio, unbuttoning the silver latch with a sharp, concussive click.
"Distinguished guests, honored judges, and captains of industry," I addressed the vast hall, my voice resonating off the gilded cornices. "We are gathered today to celebrate the merger of House Moretti and House Caruso. But before the vows are spoken, there is a small matter of corporate and genetic disclosure."
I pulled the first document from the portfolio—a certified legal folio bearing the gold seal of the Illinois Department of Public Health.
"Eight months ago, Adrian Moretti divorced me under the public pretext that I was incapable of bearing an heir," I announced to the breathless room. "He claimed that our marriage was cursed. But at 6:14 AM on Wednesday morning, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, I gave birth to a healthy, seven-pound baby girl."
A collective, stunned gasp swept across the four hundred guests like a sudden gust of wind.
Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat. His knuckles turned white where he gripped his lapel. "You're lying. You fabricated a certificate—"
"This is the court-certified DNA paternity match, Adrian," I interrupted, projecting the high-resolution diagnostic scan from my tablet onto the ballroom’s sixty-foot digital presentation wall.
The massive screens illuminated in blinding clarity:
CHILD: ISABELLA CLARA MORETTI

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.998% — BIOLOGICAL FATHER: ADRIAN VINCENT MORETTI.
The ballroom erupted into a chaotic roar of whispers, shouts, and dropped glasses. Donna Isabella clutched her throat, collapsing back into her chair with a face the color of skim milk.
