Chapter 5 - The Unmasking of the Bride

Adrian stared at the glowing digital screen. The numbers, the genetic markers, the legal seal—it was undeniable. For thirty seconds, the most feared mafia boss in Chicago looked like a man who had stepped off the edge of a cliff.

"My... my daughter...?" Adrian stammered, his voice cracking, stepping toward me with trembling hands. "Clara... where is she? Where is my child?"

"She is in a place where your name, your blood, and your crimes will never touch her, Adrian," I replied, my hazel eyes holding his with sub-zero granite.

Valentina lunged down the marble steps, her ivory train twisting violently around her heels, her face contorted with feral, hysterical malice. "She’s a liar! It’s a fraud! She bought a baby from a clinic to ruin my wedding! Adrian, tell security to kill her!"

"Let’s talk about your baby, Valentina," I said, pulling the second document from the portfolio.

I tapped the tablet once more.

The sixty-foot wall display shifted, displaying the confidential medical records from Dr. Arthur Sterling’s private clinic in Oak Brook, dated four days ago:

PATIENT: VALENTINA CARUSO

ULTRASOUND FINDINGS: NON-GRAVID UTERUS. ZERO EVIDENCE OF EMBRYONIC OR FETAL DEVELOPMENT.

PROCEDURE LOG: PRESCRIPTION FOR SILICONE THEATRICAL PROSTHETIC ISSUED PER CLIENT REQUEST.

A deafening, concussive silence slammed into the Grand Ballroom.

Don Salvatore Caruso—Valentina’s father—jumped to his feet at the front table, his hands trembling violently, his glass of scotch shattering against the mahogany.

Adrian slowly turned his head toward the woman standing in the white wedding gown.

His slate-gray eyes were no longer human; they were the glacial, merciless eyes of an apex predator realizing he had been played for a fool in front of four hundred of his peers.

"You lied to me," Adrian whispered, each word dropping like an iron anvil.

"Adrian... darling, listen to me!" Valentina screamed, tears tearing clean tracks through her heavy makeup as she backed away toward the altar. "My father was in debt! They were going to liquidate our warehouses! I did it for our future! I was going to adopt a newborn from Europe after the wedding—you would never have known the difference!"

Adrian took one step toward her, his fists clenching so hard the leather of his gloves creaked, but before he could cross the dais, the heavy iron security shutters over the ballroom windows slammed down with deafening, mechanical thuds.

The grand chandeliers flickered, cutting out for three agonizing seconds before the harsh, blinding white emergency floodlights roared to life.
