Chapter 10 - The Unshakable Foundation

The following Sunday morning, the dawn broke over Boston Harbor in brilliant ribbons of gold, rose, and amber, turning the cold water into a glittering, tranquil mirror.
Emma walked along the brick promenade near the waterfront, dressed in a warm woolen pea coat, dark denim trousers, and sturdy leather boots, carrying two paper cups of hot green tea from a small neighborhood bakery.
Beside her walked Margaret Sterling, wrapped in a warm camel-hair coat, her arm linked securely through Emma’s.
They walked in comfortable, peaceful silence, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves against the seawall and the distant cries of gulls wheeling in the morning air.
They stopped near the outer pier, looking out toward the shipping channels where a massive container vessel bearing the silver falcon crest of the Sterling fleet was gliding smoothly out toward the open Atlantic.
"Do you ever miss scanning groceries, Emma?" Margaret asked softly, looking up at her with immense, maternal pride.
Emma looked down at her mentor, taking a slow sip of her tea, feeling the warm morning breeze brush against her face.
She thought of the freezing sleet on Register Four. She thought of her mother’s tired smile in their warm apartment. She thought of the ten-dollar bill on the rubber belt, and the six words that had rewritten her destiny.

"I have the checkout lane right here with me, Margaret," Emma smiled, gently squeezing the old woman’s arm. "When your foundation is built on truth and mercy, the noise of the world can never shake you."
They stood together on the edge of the great city, watching the golden sun rise higher into the cloudless sky, knowing with absolute, eternal certainty that the house they had built together would stand strong, shelter the fallen, and endure for generations to come.
