Chapter 6 - The Penthouse in the Sky

Forty-five minutes later, Emma found herself sitting in the rear passenger seat of the armored black limousine, gliding smoothly through the wet, neon-lit streets of downtown Boston.

The interior of the vehicle was a cathedral of hand-stitched calfskin, polished walnut, and soft amber lighting that cast a warm, comforting glow over her damp canvas sneakers. Sitting across from her was Margaret Sterling, wrapped in a cashmere throw blanket, sipping a cup of steaming green tea from a silver thermos.

"Eat some of these, child," Margaret instructed gently, pushing a small crystal bowl of warm honey-glazed pastries toward Emma. "You're half-starved. I know what working double shifts on empty calories looks like."

Emma hesitantly took a small pastry, her hands still trembling slightly. "Mrs. Sterling... I still don't understand. Where are we going? My mother is going to worry if I don't get home to Pilsen—"

"Your mother has already been notified by my executive secretary, and a private town car is currently parked outside her apartment building to ensure she is comfortable," Margaret interrupted smoothly, offering a reassuring smile. "As for where we are going, we are going to my home. The Sterling-Vance Tower on Boylston Street. We have a rather urgent board restructuring to attend to."

The limousine turned off the wet highway and descended into a private, subterranean parking garage beneath a towering monolith of black glass and brushed steel that pierced the Boston clouds.

The private elevator carried them upward in absolute, vibrationless silence, rising sixty floors in less than thirty seconds until the doors slid open directly into a private penthouse library.

The room was breathtaking. Walls lined with ancient leather-bound volumes, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows overlooking the glittering expanse of Boston Harbor, and a massive mahogany conference table illuminated by low, recessed brass lamps.

Waiting around the table were six senior executives of the Sterling-Vance Global Conglomerate, all dressed in immaculate black-tie formal wear, having been dragged away from an evening charity gala by emergency executive order.

As Margaret walked into the library, leaning slightly on her polished ebony cane, every single executive stood up instantly in absolute, reverent silence.

Margaret walked to the head of the table, sat down in a high-backed leather chair, and gestured for Emma to take the seat directly to her right.

"Sit down, everyone," Margaret commanded, her voice ringing clear and authoritative across the vaulted ceiling.

She turned her pale blue eyes toward the lead corporate attorney, who was standing nervously near the projector screen.

"Is the foundation restructuring charter ready, Arthur?" Margaret asked.

"Prepared and notarized, Madam Chair," Arthur Sterling replied, his hands shaking slightly as he tapped his digital tablet. "The emergency equity allocation for the Emma Carter Humanitarian Trust has been fully authorized under Section 9 of the primary charter."
