Chapter 5 - The Audit Begins

Inside the brightly lit lobby of Apex Market, the atmosphere had shifted from routine retail operations to absolute, blind panic.

Gary Vance stood behind the customer service counter, his face the color of skim milk, clutching his handheld inventory tablet with hands that shook so violently he dropped it twice. Standing before him were two senior corporate attorneys from the Sterling-Vance Foundation, accompanied by three armed private security operatives in dark wool overcoats who had stepped out of the second limousine that had pulled up behind the first.

The lead attorney, a sharp-eyed woman named Katherine Thorne, placed a heavy leather briefcase onto the counter with a dull, echoing thud.

"Mr. Vance," Katherine said, her voice crisp and devoid of emotion. "By order of the foundation’s primary trustee, your store management credentials are revoked effective immediately. Hand over your store keys, your inventory access cards, and your master override code."

"My... my keys?!" Gary sputtered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched squeak as he looked around the store at the handful of remaining shoppers watching in stunned silence. "You can't do this! I have a five-year management retention contract signed by regional operations! I've increased profit margins by twelve percent this quarter!"

"You increased profit margins by illegally withholding employee break-time pay, slashing inventory safety audits, and firing cashiers who show basic human empathy," Katherine replied coldly, sliding a thick stack of printed audit logs across the counter. "Our forensic accountants have been reviewing your store logs for the past forty-eight hours, Mr. Vance. You are currently facing an internal investigation for wage theft, hostile workplace harassment, and intentional safety violations."

Katherine leaned forward, resting her knuckles on the counter.

"Furthermore," she continued, her eyes narrowing, "you just wrongfully terminated a bonded employee for exercising humane discretion during an emergency medical supply purchase. Your severance is void, your pension is forfeited, and if you are still standing on this property when the clock strikes nine, our security detail will have you arrested for commercial trespassing."

Gary opened his mouth to protest, but the two armed operatives stepped forward, their massive shoulders blocking his view of the store. Without another word, Gary ripped his metal manager name tag off his polyester lapel, threw it onto the counter, and bolted out the back employee exit into the freezing night, disappearing from the retail world forever.

Meanwhile, just outside the front entrance, Emma Carter stood beside the black limousine, staring at Margaret Sterling in absolute, uncomprehending shock.

"Me?" Emma whispered, pointing to herself. "You want me to... to do what?"
