Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Horizon
One year after the morning Damian Vance mocked her as an expense and tried to discard her in his executive suite, the shores of Lake Michigan were bathed in the brilliant, golden light of late summer.
On the expansive wrap-around stone terrace of the newly restored Voss ancestral estate in Lake Forest, a gentle afternoon breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming white hydrangeas, wild lavender, and fresh pine across the lawns.
A long cedar dining table was set upon the terrace, decorated with fresh flowers, platters of fresh local seafood, and sparkling mineral water.
Harrison Reed, Frank Sterling, Dr. Sarah Lin, and Elena’s closest operational partners gathered around the table, their cheerful conversation and acoustic piano music drifting through the open French doors of the drawing room.
Elena stood by the stone balustrade, holding a glass of chilled sparkling water, watching the white sailboats glide peacefully across the sparkling blue water of the lake.
She wore a simple, exquisite emerald silk dress, her dark hair falling softly around her shoulders, her face glowing with radiant health, absolute freedom, and an unshakeable inner peace.
She reached into her small clutch, pulling out the old brass key to the brownstone apartment where she had once lived in the shadows.
She turned the key over in her fingers, feeling the cool metal, before walking down the terrace steps to the edge of the private stone pier.
With a smooth, effortless motion of her arm, Elena tossed the key far out into the deep blue water.
The small brass object broke the surface with a tiny, clean splash, sinking into the dark depths of the lake, gone forever.
