Chapter 5 - The Forensic Autopsy of Greed
At five o'clock that evening, the secure technical laboratory of the Voss Sovereign Trust on Wacker Drive was operating at peak capacity.
Elena sat in a glass-enclosed conference room reviewing real-time data extractions with Dr. Sarah Lin, the chief cyber-forensics specialist for the holding group, and Detective Raymond Vance of the Chicago Police Department’s Special Financial Crimes Division.
"We completed the recovery of the deleted server partitions from Damian's private office terminal twenty minutes ago, Chairman Voss," Dr. Lin reported, sliding a tablet across the table. "What we uncovered goes far beyond standard corporate embezzlement."
Elena leaned forward, her eyes scanning the forensic timeline. "What did he do, Sarah?"
"Six months ago, Damian established an offshore dummy corporation called Aegis Maritime Protocol in Panama," Dr. Lin explained. "He was preparing to execute an intentional, catastrophic default on Vance Logistics' thirty-million-dollar maritime insurance policy. He had arranged for two older container vessels operating in the Gulf of Mexico to be intentionally scuttled under the guise of an engine room fire, intending to collect the sixty-million-dollar hull insurance payout to cover his personal debts in Macau."
Elena felt an icy chill run down her spine. "There were forty-two crew members on those two vessels."
"And Damian had drafted the operational orders specifically instructing the captain not to execute emergency maintenance overhauls before the voyage," Detective Vance added, his jaw clenched with deep disgust. "He was willing to send forty-two working-class sailors to the bottom of the Gulf to save his social standing."
Elena closed her eyes for three seconds, letting the full horror of Damian’s calculated depravity settle into her mind.
"Where are those two vessels right now?" Elena asked, opening her eyes with sharp, lethal clarity.
"They are currently docked at the Port of Houston, scheduled to depart for Veracruz at midnight," Dr. Lin replied.
Elena tapped the communication terminal on her desk, connecting directly to the Houston Port Authority.
"This is Chairman Elena Voss of Voss Global Holdings," Elena commanded into the microphone. "Execute an immediate executive port seizure on vessels Vance Pioneer and Vance Horizon. Ground all crew, initiate emergency structural safety inspections, and place both captains under the direct protection of the Maritime Safety Board."
"Orders confirmed, Chairman Voss," the port director's voice came through instantly. "The vessels are secured."

"Take this forensic archive directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Detective. Add forty-two counts of Attempted Reckless Homicide and Maritime Insurance Fraud to Damian Vance's indictment."
