Chapter 4 - The Eviction from the Penthouse

By two o'clock that afternoon, the rain had turned into a driving, icy sleet that battered the glass facade of the Gold Coast luxury high-rise where Damian had lived for three years.

A flatbed commercial moving truck was parked at the curb, flanked by two private security patrol vehicles bearing the Voss falcon insignia.

Inside the sprawling, ten-thousand-square-foot triplex penthouse, Damian was frantically shoving bespoke suits, gold watches, and leather-bound ledgers into two designer duffel bags. His hair was plastered to his forehead with sweat, his expensive shirt unbuttoned, looking like a manic ghost haunting his own former palace.

Veronica sat on an ivory velvet sofa, weeping hysterically into her hands, surrounded by four large industrial plastic bins containing her designer shoes and fur coats.

"My father's lawyer won't answer his phone, Damian!" Veronica cried out, her voice shrill and cracked. "The banks froze my trust fund credit cards at lunch! They turned off my car lease! What did you do to us?"

"Shut up, Veronica!" Damian roared, slamming a drawer shut so hard the walnut face cracked. "I am trying to pack the emergency bearer bonds from the study safe!"

He sprinted into the private library, lunging toward the biometric wall safe concealed behind an antique oil painting. He pressed his thumb against the optical scanner.

The red indicator light blinked three times: Access Denied. Master System Override.

"No, no, no!" Damian pounded both fists against the heavy steel plate, his knuckles splitting and bleeding against the cold metal. "Open, you piece of garbage! Open!"

"It won't open for you, Damian."

Damian spun around, his chest heaving, his eyes wide and bloodshot.

Elena stood in the arched doorway of the library, wearing a long, tailored black wool overcoat, her hands resting casually in her pockets. Behind her stood Harrison Reed and two uniformed officers from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department.

"Those bearer bonds were purchased using the Lin-Voss Maritime Trust reserves in 2019, Damian," Elena said, her voice flat and devoid of emotion. "Your name was never on the safety deposit registration. You were merely an authorized secondary signatory. That authorization was revoked four hours ago."

The sheriff’s deputy stepped forward, holding a certified writ of summary eviction bearing the gold seal of the Cook County Circuit Court.

"Mr. Damian Vance, Miss Veronica Sterling," the deputy announced. "Under court order 24-CH-8914, you have fifteen minutes to remove your personal clothing and exit the premises. All vehicles, art collections, safe contents, and electronic hardware remain under judicial attachment pending federal grand jury review."

Damian took two stumbling steps toward Elena, dropping his duffel bag onto the hardwood floor. He fell to his knees on the Persian rug, reaching out with trembling, blood-stained hands, looking up at her with raw, pathetic desperation.

"Elena... please," Damian wept, tears cutting clean tracks through the sweat on his face. "I made a mistake. I was blind. I let Veronica and her family get into my head... they convinced me I needed their political connections to grow the firm! I loved you, Elena! You know I loved you in the beginning!"

Elena looked down at the man kneeling at her feet. She remembered the nights she had waited up for him with warm meals, the years she had spent silently correcting his operational errors from her home laptop, and the cold, arrogant sneer he had given her this morning when he thought she was powerless.

"You never loved me, Damian," Elena whispered, her voice carrying the cold finality of an iron door closing. "You loved having someone quiet enough to let you steal without asking questions. But the quiet girl is gone. And you are left with nothing."

She turned her back on him and walked out of the penthouse into the private elevator foyer.

Behind her, Damian’s frantic, echoing screams filled the cavernous apartment as the deputies firmly hauled him to his feet and dragged him toward the service stairs.
