Chapter 6 - The Fall of Veronica Sterling

While the maritime net was closing around Damian, the Sterling family dynasty in Lake Forest was experiencing its own complete, public annihilation.

At seven o'clock that evening, the grand dining hall of the exclusive Lake Forest Country Club was filled with three hundred members of Chicago’s high-society elite for the annual Autumn Heritage Charity Dinner.

Veronica Sterling had spent her last two thousand dollars of emergency cash on a private town car and a professional salon blowout, desperate to present an image of untouchable elegance. She sat at her family’s centerpiece table beside her mother, Eleanor Sterling, forcing a bright, brittle smile as she clinked glasses with visiting socialites.

"The rumors circulating about our family's commercial holdings are entirely fabricated by jealous corporate rivals," Eleanor Sterling was loudly assuring a group of prominent donors. "Veronica is finalizing her marriage to Damian Vance, and our joint foundation will be expanding into international shipping next month."

The heavy double doors of the country club ballroom swung open with concussive force.

Every conversation in the vast hall died instantly.

Four armed special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by two investigators from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Public Integrity Unit, strode down the center carpet runner with synchronized, unyielding precision.

At their head walked Harrison Reed, holding a leather evidentiary binder bearing the seal of the United States District Court.

Veronica jumped to her feet, her champagne glass slipping from her trembling fingers, shattering violently against the parquet floor. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private club! You have no right to enter this dining room!"

The lead FBI agent stepped directly up to the Sterling table, unholstering a pair of steel transport handcuffs.

"Veronica Sterling, Councilman Harold Sterling," the agent announced, his voice carrying clearly across the three hundred stunned aristocrats. "We have federal arrest warrants issued by the Northern District of Illinois. Charges include: Conspiracy to Commit Public Bribery, Interstate Money Laundering, Obstruction of Justice, and Extortion."

Eleanor Sterling gasped, clutching her diamond necklace as she collapsed back into her chair. "Bribery? My husband is a decorated civil servant!"

"Your husband accepted two point four million dollars in commercial kickbacks from Damian Vance to approve fraudulent zoning permits for the Meridian Tower expansion," Harrison Reed declared, his deep voice slicing through the room. "The wire transfers were routed through Veronica’s private boutique modeling agency in Milan. The Swiss bank records were unsealed by federal subpoena forty minutes ago."

Veronica backed away toward the fireplace, her designer dress shaking with violent tremors as she looked around the room at her socialite friends. Not a single person stepped forward to defend her; every high-born guest looked away in sheer revulsion, pulling back their chairs to avoid being associated with the disgraced family.

Two female federal agents moved in swiftly, grabbing Veronica’s wrists and securing them in heavy steel handcuffs behind her back.

"Elena Voss did this!" Veronica shrieked, thrashing wildly against the agents' grip as her makeup was ruined by frantic, humiliated tears. "That little gutter tramp destroyed my family!"

"Chairman Elena Voss didn't destroy your family, Miss Sterling," Harrison Reed replied coldly, watching her being hauled toward the doors. "She merely illuminated the rot that was already there."

As the federal agents escorted the screaming socialite and her pale, paralyzed father through the grand entrance, the society elite sat in stunned, breathless silence, watching the final collapse of the Sterling name.
