Chapter 10 - The Unshakable Table

A year after the dinner that changed everything, the Bennett family gathered once again at the sprawling estate outside Philadelphia for the annual autumn gala. The atmosphere was vastly different from that stifling evening twelve months prior. Laughter echoed through the high-ceilinged dining rooms, and the air smelled of autumn leaves and roasted chestnuts.
Ruth Bennett sat at the head of the long walnut table, her posture straight, her eyes bright with satisfaction. When Claire walked into the room, dressed in a sharp crimson suit that commanded the space without apology, the entire table turned—not with the cowardice or hesitation of the past, but with genuine warmth and deep respect.
There was no awkward seating arrangement. No mistress waiting in the wings to claim a stolen place. The chair to the right of the head of the table remained empty for a moment, symbolizing the past, before Claire took her rightful seat beside the matriarch who had defended the truth.
As the first course was served, Ruth raised her crystal glass, catching Claire’s eye across the table.

"To foundations that cannot be shaken," Ruth announced clearly, her voice ringing out across the room. "And to those who know the exact value of what they built."
Twenty-one glasses rose in unison, joining in the toast. Claire raised her glass, looking around the table at the people who respected her not as someone's shadow, but as a leader in her own right. The humiliation of that night a year ago felt like a lifetime away. She had stepped out of the cold shadow of a false marriage and into the bright, unyielding light of her own making, proving permanently that no one can ever take a seat you earned with your own blood, sweat, and absolute truth.
