Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Revolt
By Monday morning, the news of the family dinner had already rippled through the glass towers of Bennett Advanced Systems. Corporate gossip travels faster than fiber-optic cables, and by nine o’clock, whispers about Vanessa Cole’s abrupt dismissal and Ethan Bennett’s marital crisis had reached every department.
Claire sat in a sleek, minimalist conference room on the top floor of the Pittsburgh headquarters. She wasn't alone. Arthur, Ruth’s legal counsel, and two senior members of the board of directors sat across from her.
"Mrs. Bennett," the lead board director, a seasoned venture capitalist named Richard Vance, said carefully. "We received the emergency trust filing from Mrs. Ruth Bennett this morning. It appears the voting shares have been temporarily frozen pending a restructuring review."
"I am aware," Claire replied calmly, reviewing a tablet filled with corporate asset reports.
"Ethan is outside," Vance continued, hesitating. "He’s demanding entry. He claims this is a personal matter that shouldn't interfere with corporate governance."
"Tell him corporate governance starts with the ethics clause in section nine," Claire replied without looking up. "And section nine explicitly prohibits executives from utilizing company resources to fund personal misconduct—including luxury apartments leased in Manhattan under corporate partnerships for private affairs."
The conference room door swung open before Vance could answer. Ethan strode in, his tie loosened, his hair slightly disheveled. The polished CEO persona was entirely gone, replaced by raw, desperate anger.
"What is the meaning of this?" Ethan demanded, slamming his hand onto the mahogany table. "Claire, are you out of your mind? You’re bringing family drama into the boardroom? You’re freezing my accounts?"
Claire finally raised her eyes, looking at him with absolute detachment. "I’m not bringing family drama into the boardroom, Ethan. I’m conducting an audit. You spent company funds to maintain an apartment for Vanessa. You violated federal compliance regulations and corporate ethics guidelines."
"It was a minor expense account discrepancy! Every executive does it!" Ethan shouted.
"Not anymore," a sharp, familiar voice echoed from the doorway.
Everyone turned. Ruth Bennett rolled into the room in a motorized chair, her expression impassive, flanked by two corporate security guards.
"Sit down, Ethan," Ruth said coldly. "Your tenure as CEO is under formal review. And as of this morning, the board has appointed a new executive committee chair to oversee operations."
Ethan stared at his grandmother in sheer disbelief. "Who? Who could possibly take over? No one knows the architecture of this platform!"

"She does," Ruth said simply. "She wrote the first lines of code with you, and she audited every financial statement since day one. Bennett Advanced Systems belongs to the person who actually kept it alive."
