Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Empire

The dismantling of Ethan’s corporate fortress happened with terrifying speed. Without the backing of Ruth’s voting trust and the board's sudden alignment with Claire, Ethan found himself stripped of his executive privileges within forty-eight hours. His company-issued phone was deactivated, his corporate credit cards were blocked, and his office on the fiftieth floor was cleared out by midday Tuesday.

Claire stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the executive office she now occupied, looking out over the sprawling city skyline. The view was breathtaking, but it brought her no joy—only a profound sense of closure.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. The door pushed open, and Ethan walked in. He didn't look like the untouchable tech mogul anymore; he looked tired, defeated, and profoundly lost.

"You really did it," Ethan murmured, walking slowly toward the desk. "You actually took everything."

"I didn't take anything, Ethan," Claire said, turning to face him. "I just reclaimed what was mine. You built your pride on top of my sacrifices, and when you thought you outgrew them, you tried to throw them away."

"I made a mistake," Ethan pleaded, his voice breaking. "Vanessa meant nothing. It was just... it was just a distraction. Success came too fast, Claire. I lost my way. We can fix this. We can go back to how things were."

Claire let out a quiet, humorless laugh. "There is no going back, Ethan. You can't un-ring a bell, and you can't un-write betrayal. The divorce papers will be served by the end of the week. You'll retain a fair settlement—far more than you had when we lived above the laundromat—so you won't starve. But you will do it on your own."

Ethan stared at her, the reality finally sinking in. All his wealth, all his engineering brilliance, all his corporate dominance meant nothing because he had hollowed out the core of his own life.

"You'll be alone," Ethan whispered bitterly.

"No, Ethan," Claire said, walking past him toward the door. "I am finally free."
