Chapter 3 - The Matriarch’s Ledger

"Sit down, Ethan," Ruth repeated, her voice cutting through the dining room like a scalpel.
Ethan sank back into his chair, his face pale. He knew better than anyone that his grandmother held the ultimate trump card in the Bennett dynasty. While Ethan owned the title of CEO, Ruth Bennett retained fifty-one percent voting control of the family holding company through a legacy trust established by her late husband.
Ruth leaned heavily on her cane as she walked slowly down the length of the table, stopping directly behind Vanessa, who was now trembling under the old woman's scrutiny.
"You," Ruth said softly, looking down at Vanessa. "In my house, at my table, you do not sit where you have not earned the right to stand. Pack your things and leave before I have security throw you out the front gates."
Vanessa looked around frantically, expecting Ethan to defend her. But Ethan sat frozen, staring straight ahead. Humiliated and furious, Vanessa snatched her designer handbag from the floor, pushed her chair back with a loud screech, and fled the dining room.
The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, leaving a stunned, breathless silence in the room.
Ruth turned her sharp gaze back to her grandson. "And you, Ethan. You bring a stranger into my home while your wife stands waiting? Have you forgotten who built this foundation?"
"Grandma, things are complicated," Ethan stammered, his executive composure completely shattered. "Claire and I... we grew apart. It’s a modern arrangement."
"An arrangement?" Ruth scoffed, her eyes flashing with contempt. "You think because you managed to scale a software platform to a hundred million dollars, you invented success? You were broke in a Pittsburgh basement when Claire was paying your grocery bills with tips from a diner. Do you think I don't know? Do you think I haven't kept records?"
Ruth motioned to her longtime assistant, Arthur, who stood quietly by the corner cabinet. Arthur stepped forward, placing a thick leather-bound ledger onto the center of the table right in front of Ethan.

"What is this?" Ethan whispered.
"That," Ruth said, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper, "is the history of Bennett Advanced Systems. Every dollar Claire invested, every debt she covered, every patent she legally helped you file when your name wasn't even credit-worthy. You didn't build this empire alone, Ethan. And today, you are going to learn what happens when you try to discard the foundation."
