Chapter 2 - The Trap in the House

The silence in the kitchen stretched so thin it felt like a razor blade pressed against my throat. My military training screamed at me to assess the threat, to neutralize the target, to tear this arrogant stranger away from my wife. But my heart was hammering against my ribs, confused and shattered by the look in Brooke’s eyes.

"Brooke," I said, my voice dropping into a desperate plea as I took another step forward. "Who is this guy? What is going on here? Tell me you didn't—"

"Don't look at her," the stranger cut me off, stepping firmly in front of Brooke, completely blocking her from my view. He adjusted the collar of my combat jacket with deliberate insolence. "She doesn't speak to uninvited guests. And right now, you're about as uninvited as they come. My name is Julian Vance. And as you can see, things have changed while you were off playing hero in the sand."

Vance. The name hit me like a physical blow. Julian Vance was the managing director of Vance Capital, a predatory real estate firm known for foreclosing on distressed families and buying up half the county through strong-arm tactics and ruthless legal loopholes.

"This is my house," I ground out, my teeth clicking together. "My name is on the mortgage deed. Get the hell out of my kitchen before I throw you through that glass window."

Julian let out a cold, amused chuckle. He turned his head slightly toward my wife. "Brooke, sweetheart, tell the gentleman whose name is currently on the property title."

Brooke squeezed her eyes shut, a sob catching in her throat. She looked at me, her lips trembling, before whispering the words that shattered my entire world into dust.

"The... the house was foreclosed three months ago, Ethan," she choked out, her voice barely audible. "Julian bought it. All of it. The house, the cars, the accounts. We... we belong to him now."

"Foreclosed?" I stared at her, dumbfounded. "That's impossible! I sent my entire deployment hazard pay back every month! There was more than enough in the savings account to cover the mortgage for two years!"

"Savings?" Julian sneered, pulling a thick manila folder from the counter and tossing it onto the island. It slid across the marble, stopping right at the edge. "There was no savings, Captain. Your lovely wife had a bit of an expensive taste. High-stakes poker debts, private loans, luxury boutiques. By the time I stepped in to clean up her mess, she was knee-deep in a hundred grand of unsecured debt with loan sharks who break kneecaps for fun."

I snapped my gaze back to Brooke. "Is this true? Brooke, look at me! Did you gamble our life away?"

She couldn't meet my eyes. She just nodded miserably, her shoulders shaking as she clutched her arms like she was freezing to death.

"So here’s the arrangement," Julian said, stepping forward, invading my personal space with a predatory grin. "She couldn't pay her debts, so she offered collateral. And since I happen to like this property, and I happen to like her company... well, she signed over everything. Including herself. You're standing in my kitchen, Ethan. And you're looking at my woman."

Every instinct in my body told me to shatter his jaw. I lunged forward, grabbing the lapels of my own jacket that he was wearing, ready to put him through the floorboards. But before my fist could connect, two massive men in dark suits materialized out of the hallway shadows, their hands clamping onto my shoulders with iron strength, dragging me backward toward the front door.

"Get your hands off me!" I roared, thrashing against their grip.

"Get him out of my sight," Julian ordered smoothly, turning back to the stove as if nothing had happened. "And if he comes back within five miles of this property, call the county sheriff and have him arrested for stalking."

They hauled me out the front door, throwing me hard onto the wet gravel of the driveway. The heavy wooden door slammed shut in my face, locking me out of my own life.

Standing in the freezing rain, bruised and bewildered, I knew something didn't add up. Brooke loved me. We had built our marriage on absolute trust. She wouldn't gamble away our future, and she certainly wouldn't look at me with that specific kind of terror if she had willingly traded me for a billionaire predator.

As the clock struck midnight, I made up my mind. I wasn't leaving until I found out the truth.
