Chapter 3 - Midnight Infiltration

The rain had turned into a steady, freezing mist by the time I circled back to the rear of the property. The security system was sophisticated—high-definition cameras and motion sensors covering the perimeter. But Vance’s men were arrogant, relying on the luxury of their gated estate. They didn't expect a seasoned combat scout who had spent months slipping through enemy lines in the dead of night.
I bypassed the laser tripwires by scaling the thick oak tree near the second-floor balcony, slipping over the railing with the silent grace of a ghost. The glass door to our old master bedroom was unlocked—a careless mistake born of absolute arrogance.
I eased the door open, stepping barefoot onto the plush carpet of the bedroom I used to share with my wife.
The room was dark, illuminated only by the faint silver glow of the moon filtering through the sheer curtains. The king-size bed dominated the center of the room. Brooke was lying beneath the heavy comforter, facing away from the balcony, her breathing shallow and uneven. She was awake. I could tell by the rigid tension in her shoulders.
I moved across the room like a shadow, making zero sound. My heart hammered against my ribs, a mixture of hope and paralyzing dread. I needed to get her out of here. I needed to hear her say that she was forced into this, that Julian Vance was holding her against her will.
"Brooke," I whispered, dropping to my knees beside the bed.
She flinched violently, letting out a stifled gasp. She started to turn away, pulling the heavy comforter tighter around her neck, as if trying to hide herself from the world.
"Don't look at me, Ethan," she whimpered, her voice cracking with absolute despair. "Please... just go. If Julian finds you here, he'll kill you. He'll kill us both."
"He's not going to kill anyone," I said firmly, reaching out to gently pull the comforter away from her face. "We're getting out of here. I have a car parked down the road. We'll go to the police, we'll expose his loansharking—"
"No!" she screamed in a frantic whisper, swatting my hands away with surprising strength. But in her panic, the heavy comforter slipped down past her shoulders.
The moonlight flooded across the bed, illuminating her upper body.
I froze. The breath sucked out of my lungs, and every drop of blood in my body turned instantly to ice.

Her trembling skin was covered in a horrifying mosaic of dark, overlapping purple bruises, cigarette burns, and jagged red whip marks that crisscrossed her back and shoulders. It wasn't just a domestic dispute. It was a torture chamber.
"My God, Brooke..." I breathed, my hands hovering over her ruined skin, too terrified to even touch her for fear of causing more pain. "What did he do to you?"
