Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Vance Capital

The sun broke over the horizon, casting a brilliant, golden light across the manicured lawns of the estate, but the atmosphere outside was anything but peaceful. Sirens wailed in the distance as a convoy of federal marshals, state troopers, and tactical transport vehicles flooded the property.
Brooke sat wrapped in a warm wool blanket on the front porch steps, a team of paramedics gently tending to the cuts and bruises on her arms. I sat beside her, holding her hand tightly, refusing to let go, watching as federal agents marched Julian Vance out of the front doors in heavy steel chains and a fluorescent orange jumpsuit.
Julian’s face was bruised, his arrogance completely shattered, his expensive silk bathrobe stained with dust and mud. As the marshals shoved him into the back of a steel-caged transport van, he turned his head and locked his cold, hateful eyes on me one last time.
I didn't blink. I stared right back at him, holding up the signed confession and the audio recorder for him to see.
The van doors slammed shut with a heavy, definitive BANG, sealing him away from the world he had tried to control through fear and violence.
"He's gone, sweetheart," I whispered, kissing Brooke’s forehead, tears of profound relief finally spilling over my lashes. "You're never going to see him again. The house, the accounts, the estate... the federal government has seized everything under the RICO Act. Vance Capital is officially liquidated."
Brooke let out a long, shuddering breath, burying her face in my shoulder. For the first time in six months, she wasn't trembling. The haunted, terrified look in her eyes was finally gone, replaced by the warm, brilliant light of a survivor taking her first true breath of freedom.

"Thank you, Ethan," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You really brought the war home."
"No," I replied, pulling her closer against my chest. "The war is over. Now, we finally get to go home."
