Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

It was a crisp, brilliant autumn morning, exactly one year since the night the glass shattered in the bedroom.
The air smelled of fallen oak leaves, woodsmoke, and crisp morning frost. The old limestone estate was gone—demolished by the county to make way for a sprawling public park and community center funded entirely by the seized assets of the Vance estate.
Brooke and I had moved into a modest, beautiful white-painted farmhouse nestled in the quiet rolling hills outside the county line. Brooke stepped out through the front screen door, wearing a comfortable flannel shirt and jeans, holding two fresh mugs of coffee. She walked up beside me, slipping her arm around my waist and resting her head against my shoulder.
"Penny for your thoughts, Captain?" she teased gently, a playful smile touching her lips.
"Just thinking about how quiet the world is," I replied, wrapping my free arm around her and pulling her close, feeling the steady, healthy beat of her heart against mine. "No alarms. No snipers. No billionaires with God complexes."

"Good," she murmured, closing her eyes and breathing in the crisp morning air. "Because I was starting to think peace was overrated."
We stood together on the porch, wrapped in each other's arms, watching the golden sun climb higher into the autumn sky.
