Chapter 3 - The Golden Trap

The Mitchell household in Oak Brook did not feel like a sanctuary; it felt like a pressurized submarine sinking past its hull-crush depth.
Ryan Mitchell stood before the master bathroom vanity, his hands trembling as he buttoned the collar of his last remaining bespoke shirt. His eyes were bloodshot, shadowed by weeks of sleepless nights spent staring at foreclosure warnings, collection letters, and spreadsheets drenched in red ink.
"Ryan! Where is the American Express card?!"
Amber stormed into the bathroom, her silk robe flying open, her face twisted in rage. Five years of marriage and a lifestyle built entirely on borrowed money had burned away the sweet, giggling coquette who had once stood beside him in the courthouse. Her blonde hair was perfectly styled, but her eyes were wild, frantic with the terror of impending social death.
"I tried to pay for my hair appointment at the salon in Hinsdale, and the stylist told me the transaction was denied! In front of Caroline and Sarah! Do you have any idea how humiliating that was?!"
Ryan gripped the edges of the marble basin, his teeth grinding until his jaw ached. "The card is maxed out, Amber! Every card is maxed out! I told you three days ago—we do not have the liquidity! The commercial lease on the Cicero warehouse was terminated yesterday because we owe four months of back rent!"
"That’s your fault!" she shrieked, slamming her designer handbag onto the counter, knocking over a crystal bottle of perfume that shattered across the tiles, filling the room with an overpowering scent of tuberose. "You told me you were an executive! You told me that dumping that miserable, bloated cow of an ex-wife was going to free you up to build an empire! You promised me we’d be in the country club by this year!"
"Shut up about Olivia!" Ryan snapped, turning on her, his face flushing crimson. "Olivia has been gone for five years! She’s probably living in some roach-infested apartment in Ohio on food stamps! She has nothing to do with this!"
"Then fix this, Ryan!" Amber yelled, stepping into his face, her finger poking violently into his chest. "Because my father isn’t giving you another dime. He told me last night that you’re a financial black hole. If you don't bring in cash by the end of this month, the house goes, the cars go, and I am filing for divorce. I didn't sign up to play house with a bankrupt failure!"
She spun around and slammed the bathroom door so hard the crystal sconces on the wall rattled.
Ryan stood alone in the suffocating silence, breathing heavily. He looked at his reflection in the mirror.
*A failure.*
The word clawed at his throat. He had done everything right. He had chosen the hot, glamorous woman over the boring, domestic wife. He had abandoned the child that would have weighed him down with endless medical bills and sleepless nights. He had sought wealth, status, and power.
Why was the universe punishing him while less deserving men thrived?
His phone chimed on the marble counter.
Ryan snatched it up, expecting another automated text from a debt collector or a furious warehouse manager demanding payroll.
Instead, the notification read:
**From: Executive Talent Acquisition, Apex Horizon Holdings**
**Subject: Invitation to Interview - Senior Director of Global Supply Chain**
Ryan’s breath caught in his throat. His thumbs shook as he unlocked the phone and read the email.
*Dear Mr. Mitchell,*
*Your qualifications and executive background have drawn the attention of our Senior Recruitment Board. Given your self-proclaimed experience in eliminating organizational liabilities and optimizing operational flow, Apex Horizon Holdings would like to invite you for an executive screening interview this Friday, October 14th, at 10:00 AM at the Apex Horizon Tower in Chicago.*
*Please be advised that this role carries a base compensation package of $450,000, along with performance incentives and equity participation. Final candidates will be presented directly to our anonymous Principal Owner and Chief Executive Officer.*
*Please confirm your availability.*
Ryan read the email three times. A wild, manic laugh bubbled up from his chest, bursting past his lips into the empty bathroom.
"I knew it," he whispered, running a trembling hand through his hair. "I knew it! They see it. A real corporation sees my value!"
Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars base. Equity. Performance bonuses.
In a single stroke, all his debts would be eradicated. The Oak Brook house would be saved. Amber would be silenced, once again worshipping him as the powerful provider. He would walk through the lobby of the Apex Horizon Tower—the most prestigious commercial address in the Midwest—and take his rightful place among the corporate elite.
He opened the bathroom door and walked out into the master bedroom where Amber was furiously scrolling through her phone.
"Cancel your complaints, Amber," Ryan said, his voice swelling with the arrogant, smooth cadence he hadn't possessed in months. He straightened his silk tie and puffed out his chest.
Amber looked up, sneering. "Why? Did a miracle happen?"
"Better than a miracle," Ryan smirked, tossing his phone onto the bed in front of her. "Apex Horizon wants me. The biggest conglomerate in the state. Four hundred and fifty grand a year to start."
Amber’s eyes widened as she read the screen. The hostility in her posture softened, replaced by a calculating, avaricious gleam. "Apex Horizon? The ones hosting the Starlight Children’s Foundation Gala this weekend at the Drake?"
"The very same," Ryan said, walking over to the full-length mirror and smoothing down his jacket. "They want a ruthless leader. Someone who knows how to cut away dead weight. I'm going to walk into that tower on Friday, dazzle their board, and take that company by storm."
He smiled at his reflection, completely intoxicated by his own delusion.
