Chapter 6 - The Glass Shatters

The entire grand ballroom seemed to warp around Ryan Mitchell’s vision.

The glittering lights, the crystal chandeliers, the hum of high-society laughter—all of it faded into a deafening, high-pitched ringing that roared in his ears.

*Olivia.*

It couldn't be Olivia. Olivia was supposed to be ruined. She was supposed to be a broken, single mother living in Dayton, scraping pennies together, surviving on the scraps of an insignificant life. She was supposed to be carrying the permanent scars of his rejection, weeping into a pillow while he climbed the corporate ladder.

Instead, she stood twenty feet away from him, the absolute center of gravity in a room filled with billionaires.

Governor Sterling stepped forward, extending two hands to clasp hers with profound deference. "Chairwoman Parker. An honor, as always. Your endowment to the children's medical wing this year has broken every state record."

"Children deserve a foundation built on truth and protection, Governor," Olivia replied, her voice carrying through the quieted room like a crystal bell—pure, melodic, and terrifyingly calm. "Without stability, the future collapses."

Then, slowly, deliberately, Olivia turned her gaze.

Her eyes locked onto Ryan.

There was no shock in her gaze. No anger. No trembling vulnerability. There was only the cold, amused detachment of a scientist observing an amoeba beneath a glass slide.

"Ryan..." Amber’s voice was a frantic hiss beside him. She was shaking violently, clutching his arm with fingers that had gone ice-cold. "Ryan, talk to me! That’s your ex-wife?! *That* is the woman you left for me?!"

Ryan couldn't answer. He couldn't draw enough air into his lungs.

Olivia took Leo’s small hand and walked directly toward them.

The crowd parted before her like the Red Sea. Marcus Vance walked half a step behind her right shoulder, his face carved from ancient, pitiless granite.

Every eye in the ballroom followed her trajectory. Within seconds, Olivia stood less than four feet from Ryan and Amber.

The scent of her perfume reached him—rare jasmine, white cedar, and ambergris. It was the scent of untouchable wealth.

Ryan swallowed hard, his survival instinct kicking into desperate, chaotic overdrive. His brain, hopelessly wired for manipulation, tried to compute an angle. *She loved me once. She was obsessed with me. We were married. We share a child.*

A hideous, trembling smile broke across Ryan's pale face.

"Olivia..." Ryan croaked, his voice cracking before he cleared his throat. "Olivia... my God. Look at you."

He took a step forward, his hands lifting instinctively, as if to embrace her or touch her bare shoulder.

A mountain of muscle in a bespoke tuxedo stepped between them. Apex Horizon’s chief of security did not draw a weapon; he simply planted his broad frame like a brick wall, his eyes dead and unblinking.

Ryan froze, his hands hovering awkwardly in mid-air.

"Mr. Mitchell," Olivia said softly. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't need to. The entire perimeter had fallen completely silent, listening to every word. "I see you made it to the gala."

"Olivia, please..." Ryan stammered, his eyes darting frantically between her and the little boy standing beside her.

Ryan looked down at Leo.

The boy looked back at him with cool, undisturbed curiosity. He possessed Ryan’s jawline, but his eyes were purely Thomas Parker’s—sharp, penetrating, and entirely unintimidated.

"Is that..." Ryan’s breath hitched, a sudden, horrifying realization crashing through his chest like a freight train. "Is that... my son?"

Leo tilted his head, looking up at Olivia. "Mommy, who is this strange man in the rented suit?"

A quiet gasp rippled through the surrounding patrons.

Amber stepped forward, her panic transforming into shrill, venomous desperation. "Now wait just a minute! Olivia! You can't do this! You lied to Ryan! You hid this money from him when you were married! You had forty million dollars—hundreds of millions—and you let him struggle?! You let us go into debt?!"

Olivia slowly turned her gaze toward Amber.

The sheer weight of Olivia’s stare made Amber recoil half a step, the words dying in her throat.

"I hid nothing, Mrs. Mitchell," Olivia said smoothly, her tone utterly devoid of heat. "My father built an empire with his bare hands, while your husband spent his twenties pretending to be a prodigy. My father's will was a matter of public record. But Ryan never bothered to ask about my family, did he? He never visited my parents' grave. He was too busy entertaining you at the downtown Marriott while I was eight months pregnant."

Color drained completely from Amber's cheeks. Whispers erupted around them like a wildfire.

"Did you hear that?" a prominent venture capitalist whispered behind his hand.

"He cheated on her while she was carrying his child?"

"Disgusting."

"Ryan..." Amber whimpered, covering her face with one trembling hand.

Ryan ignored her completely. He fell to his knees.

Right there, on the plush velvet carpet of the Drake Grand Ballroom, in front of the Governor of Illinois, the city’s corporate elite, and hundreds of cameras, Ryan Mitchell dropped to his knees.

"Olivia... please," Ryan begged, tears of absolute humiliation and terror finally spilling over his cheeks. "I was wrong. I was stupid! I was under so much stress... I had a breakdown! You know I loved you! We built a life together! Think of our history! Think of our son!"

He reached out, his trembling fingers attempting to touch the hem of her liquid black gown.

Olivia did not flinch. She simply took one step backward, completely out of his reach.

"You don't have a son, Mr. Mitchell," Olivia said, her voice dropping into a register that chilled the entire room to absolute zero.

Marcus Vance stepped forward, withdrawing an envelope from his breast pocket.

"October twelfth, five years ago," Marcus announced clearly for the entire ballroom to hear. "Executed at your personal request in the presence of a notary public. A total, irrevocable surrender of parental rights. You signed away every legal, moral, and physical claim to this child in exchange for zero dollars in child support so you could finance an interstate freight venture that has since gone into Chapter 7 bankruptcy."

Marcus dropped the blue-backed legal document. It fluttered through the air and landed squarely in front of Ryan’s knees on the carpet.

"You called me a liability, Ryan," Olivia said, looking down at the kneeling man with nothing more than mild pity. "You told the recruitment board yesterday that when something becomes an impediment to your momentum, you cut it loose without hesitation. You were right."

She placed a gentle, protective hand on Leo’s shoulder.

"You were the dead weight, Ryan. And I cut you loose five years ago."

Olivia turned her back on him.

May you like

"Security," she said quietly, without looking back. "Escort these trespassers out of the building. Their presence is soiling the carpet."
