Chapter 7 - Desperation and Blackmail

The expulsion from the Drake Hotel was not conducted with discreet, polite diplomacy.
Apex Horizon’s private security detail escorted Ryan and Amber out through the gilded bronze doors directly onto the rain-slicked pavement of Michigan Avenue. Photographers from local society blogs and business journals, waiting outside to capture the arrivals of the city's elite, were treated instead to the sight of Ryan Mitchell stumbling onto the curb, his rented tuxedo soaked by the sudden downpour, his wife hysterically screaming behind him.
"Don't touch me! Get your hands off me!" Amber shrieked at the security guards, who simply turned their backs and stepped back inside the warm, golden threshold of the hotel, the heavy glass doors locking with a definitive, mechanical click.
"Look at you!" Amber turned on Ryan, her face a smeared mask of expensive mascara and rain. "Look at what you did! You dragged me here to be humiliated! You told me she was nobody! You told me she was a fat, pathetic cow with no family and no money!"
"Shut up!" Ryan roared, the veins in his neck bulging violently. "Shut your mouth, Amber!"
"I am leaving you!" she screamed into the rainy night, passersby turning to stare at the spectacle. "My father is cutting off your lease tomorrow! You are finished, Ryan! Finished!"
She hailed a passing yellow cab, threw herself into the backseat, and slammed the door, speeding away into the Chicago traffic, leaving Ryan standing alone on the sidewalk, rain plastering his hair to his skull.
He stood there for twenty minutes, shivering violently, staring up at the glittering windows of the Drake ballroom.
*She planned this,* the toxic voice inside his head hissed. *She engineered every second of it. She set me up to fail.*
The narcissist cannot accept accountability; when confronted with the crushing reality of their own inadequacy, the psyche fractures into paranoia and rage.
Ryan didn't see his own cruelty. He didn't see his own greed. He saw only a woman who had "stolen" what rightfully belonged to him.
*If she had forty million dollars when we were married, half of that was mine!* he reasoned feverishly, his mind warping the law to fit his desperate psychosis. *She hid marital assets! She defrauded me! And that boy... that boy is a Mitchell! He carries my blood!*
By three in the morning, Ryan was back in his ransacked, half-empty Oak Brook house. Amber had already sent two movers to pack her designer clothes, leaving the closets bare.
Ryan sat at his kitchen island, drinking cheap bourbon directly from the bottle, staring at his laptop screen.
He opened an email draft addressed to Marcus Vance and cc’d to several major tabloid outlets, Chicago gossip columnists, and the legal compliance department of Apex Horizon.
Subject: **UNLAWFUL CONCEALMENT OF MARITAL ASSETS & PARENTAL FRAUD - SETTLEMENT DEMAND**
His fingers hammered the keys like a man possessed:
*'To Chairwoman Olivia Parker and Marcus Vance,*
*Let it be known that the surrender of parental rights executed five years ago was signed under extreme duress, fraudulent concealment of material facts, and intentional misrepresentation of marital assets. Olivia Parker unlawfully concealed over forty million dollars in liquid and corporate assets during our marriage, denying me my equitable share under Ohio and Illinois domestic relations law.*
*Furthermore, the alienation of my son, Leo, constitutes severe emotional distress and intentional parental deprivation.*
*My terms are non-negotiable:*
*1. Immediate wire transfer of $15,000,000 into my designated account as a final equitable distribution.*
*2. Shared joint legal and physical custody of Leo, with five thousand dollars monthly child-support paid directly to me.*
*3. Full dismissal of all civil claims regarding Mitchell Logistics.*
*If these terms are not accepted within forty-eight hours, every major news outlet in the country will receive a comprehensive dossier detailing how the anonymous Chairwoman of Apex Horizon built her empire on fraud, abandoned marital contracts, and deprived a loving father of his only child.*
*You have two days.'*
Ryan hit 'Send.'
He leaned back in his chair, taking a deep swig of bourbon, a manic, jagged grin splitting his face in the dark kitchen.
"You think you won, Olivia?" he whispered to the empty room. "Billionaires hate bad press. You’ll pay me just to keep your pretty little name out of the papers."
He didn't realize that when you threaten an apex predator, you don't extract a ransom.
May you like
You simply invite the strike.
